Hi All, just a quick question - anyone changed a crankshaft sensor? Is it a simple unplug and replace, or is there more to consider than that?

Thanks in advance.

That's all there is but its a pain to get at. Its only held in with one allen bolt but they put it under the intake next to the starter.

Thanks Delk It's a good job I have some amazing ZedShed elves who are generally willing to help with some of this stuff, otherwise I would be completely b*******.

Thanks Again!

You will need to see if the current sensor has a quick disconnect plug, if the current sensor has a disconnect replacement is easy, if it has an integrated lead then you will need to purchase the upgrade harness in addition to the sensor. Not sure when the change was made, but my 5/97 2.8 had the harness although it could have been previously "upgraded". I went with a new BMW sensor, more money but the mixed reviews of other brands made me willing to spend a little extra to only have to do it once. As a preventative measure I replaced both the camshaft and crankshaft sensors while I was refreshing/upgrading the cooling system prior to my trip south for the winter.

Make sure that the old O ring comes out with the old sensor and the new O ring goes in with the new sensor.

I know that sounds silly and obvious, but there have been cases where the crank sensor has been installed with 2 O rings. The extra space between the end of the sensor and the crank has caused all sort of starting/running issues until that extra O ring is removed.

Good point @AirOps re the quick disconnect plug on that sensor or the fixed loom wire, spotted that in the oem parts list and sent @Iamjonw a pm to check whats on the car before ordering the replacement, hope he got the correct one, we shall see at Zedshed West on the next instalment.

@colb, hopefully the correct part, Cotswold BMW checked the VIN and I will have the Crankshaft Sensor and a new lead. They are in today, so hopefully will collect them later. Fingers crossed that they are the right items.
