I can't for the love of me find my crankshaft sensor.
1998 2.8 pre face-lift.
I thought the sensor was at the back here.....

But looks like it's a blank plate

Look above/behind the starter motor Dave if my tired old memory is working it is there or was on my 2.0. I seem to think it picks up on the rear face of the flywheel but I could be wrong.

Tony.

ps. Have you tried a search on YouTube?

May be because mine was a different engine but it definitely wasn't as easy to get to at that appears to be.
Is there anything close to the front crankshaft pulley? What did the code read say?

Tony.

I changed a sensor that was at the front near the viscous coupling. Can't remember orbit was camshaft or crankshaft position sensor.
Mine is an early 2.8!(single vanos).

Was that a sensor with the cable attached like in the above diagram

I did the inlet cam sensor on my Z3, it was behind the vanos solenoid near the oil filter housing and the cable connected down under the induction pipes.

ARGH. Haha headache.
Tony do you think in that first picture that would be where your 2.0 crank sensor was?
I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

This sounds more what I changed (well I gave up and the garage did!)

Compared to the crankshaft sensor, which on mine was near the starter motor, the inlet cam sensor was a walk in the park. I think mine was the M52 engine (twin vanos) 2.0

Tony.

Been to bmw and they said it is the front one. Well he said it should be at the back but after not finding it his pride says it's at the front.
So part ordered £££
Pick it up mid week. Try again next weekend
