My z has bene on stands since June and having taken the exhaust off(it was a single not split system, i have not turned it over for a while. thinking that it probably needs running and turning over. thinking of cranking engine by hand, or refitting exhaust (rear end beam axle, diff TRA all off) and running it. wahts best solution so engine stays happy? How would i crank engine by hand if I go down that route. ta all

Revised:
My Z has been on stands since June.

Having taken the exhaust off (it was a single not split system) so I could remove the rear end: (beam axle, diff and TRA’s.

The engine has therefore not been turned over since June. I think that it probably needs running and turning over. Thinking of cranking engine by hand, or refitting exhaust and running it.

Wants the best solution so engine stays happy? If I need to crank it by had before starting it how do I go about it?

Never actually done it - but my thoughts would be remove plugs to eliminate any compression resistance and put a large socket on crankshaft pulley nut and slowly turn. If you google `turning an engine by hand' you will find similar advice from multiple sources.

Edited - crank shaft not cam.

I'm guessing you meant crankshaft pulley bolt there Colin? I would do the same thing.

Cranked engine on Friday. Went well. Thanks for all the tips. Runs so well. Pity that there is still a lot if work to do and autumn has arrived. In East Kent for short staycation with with wife and the DS3 but caught by fuel supply issues. Long way from North Somerset... looking forward to some bench work on Thursday / Friday sorting RTA with brake lines and staring to clean rusty diff.

While turning a long-stationary engine is a good thing, adding a small amount (half a teaspoon) of oil to the cylinders also helps. Before starting it is good practice to pull the fuel pump fuses and turn the engine on the starter until the oil pressure warning lamp goes out - then replace the fuses and start the engine. I am probably neurotic, but I always crank the engine in that manner even after standing for a couple of weeks.

It always makes me wince when people start a turbocharged engine and rev it before the oil has had time to find its way down to the blower bearing.

Did think about adding oil down the cylinders. Just pleased it started. Nice tip regarding fuel pump fuses.
