During our cruise to Whitby, my power assisted steering gave up.

Turned the wheel to pull out of a parking space, and a sort of bump through the steering, followed by a groaning when you turned the wheel. after a couple of corners and more groaning the steering becam heavy and the pump stopped groaning, no warning or grumbles from the pump before, hoping its a pipe gone not the pump. Any Ideas?

Secondly, are the electric windows adjustable? my window slants slightly and the window is not sealing at the front, little gap between the window and the seal.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi Jim glad you got home ok it can't have been easy driving all that way with no power steering.

As mentioned earlier today I seem to recall there are some end stops on the bottom of the window which can be adjusted so they come into contact with a plate inside the door. I have never had the need to adjust them myself but remember seeing them when I did the ///M mirror conversion on my 2.8, I am sure once you get the doorcards off and have a look it will become clear what to do.

Hope you get the power steering sorted.

If you have lost all the fluid and run the pump dry that may be damaged too, sadly.

Jim

I sympathise - the pipes on my 2.8 are well past there first flush of youth :-s

Try http://www.bmminiparts.com/Home.aspx they have a 'part price finder' - supply them with the part numbers and they will get you a 'best price' - there may be a dealer with your pipes on the shelf gathering dust that they want rid of.

Or as suggested try 'Pirtek' - give them your old pipes as a pattern and they may be able to make replacements for you.

You could ask for a discount from your local main stealer - I do and have got 10% off in the past (depends how amenable the parts man on the desk is).

You may get away without a pump - but if you do need a pump there are plenty out there in breakers yards (Quarry Motors?) who may be able to supply the pipes as well for not a lot of dosh.

I dont think its damaged (fingers crossed) I had to put fluid in it to find out where the leak was, and the steering worked fine (until it ran out of fluid again). ;)
