Corroded backplates - half shafts stuck

My backplates need replaces as they are scraping and sound awful. I took it to have them replace but mechanic said the half shafts won’t press out of the hubs so suggested I get some suspension arms and he cuts them out? Does this sound right?

I need to get it sorted as it sounds horrendous.

on a plus side he replaced the axel mounts and car feels better for that

I have seen these driveshafts need to have heat applied to press them out but do not let him cut anything. If he cuts the shafts off outside of the hub the splined shaft still needs to be pressed out of the bearing.
The noise is most likely the handbrake shoes rubbing inside the disc hub if the hold down pins have pulled through the corroded back plates. Where are you located?

Tony.

ps. I'm assuming we're talking about a Z3 here?

You could cut those rusty backplates off the car to avoid disturbing the bearing and take the retaining bolts out. There is a method of fitting new ones by cutting them so they can be flexed and twisted on over the hub then fastened using the bolts. You will need to get the cut tack welded after they have been fitted. Old thread on here showing how to if you do a search. You will need a fitting kit for the brake shoe retaining pins and springs to go with the new backplates.

What Colin suggests is probably the best option, but you do not need new suspension arms to do this. If the wheel bearings are in good order a pair of back plates and a fitting kit is all you need.

You do not tell us a lot - except that you have a grinding noise from the rear brakes . . . have you had the wheels off and eyeballed the brakes, using your ears to tell if the noise comes from inside the handbrake drum or the shield? Unless you do so, and make up your own mind, you are at the mercy of garages.

The common cause of this noise is a piece of gravel trapped between the disc and the backplate, which can sound terrible. No matter how rusty your backplates are, they cannot make any noise because of that - unless they are bent and are touching the disc.

He fitted the backplates on the wrong side! Passenger side backplate on the drivers side and vice versa.
