Took me a while to solve this one - thought it may be of interest.
Z3 2.8 1999
Car fired up and idled...but would not rev beyond 1,500rpm and was v.lumpy when opened throttle. EML and traction control / ABS lights on.
OBD reader gave multiple codes including P0120, P0220, P0600, 2D multifunction steering wheel monitoring, P0601, and a few others my Autophix 7910 reader did not recognise.
Long story short.....thermostat housing had failed and coolant had found it's way along the sender wires all the way to the ECU. A blue / green gunge had deposited itself around the connector / ECU base and presumably shorted out / conducted sent signal from 1 pin to several due to conductive gunge!!
Thermostat and housing replaced, followed by a careful ECU pin, connectors clean with electrical cleaner, and a fault code reset and all is well.
Treated it to angel eye headlamp units to celebrate!!
