Hi all,

This is a bit of a mumsnet type thread but I’m not sure where to ask elsewhere. We are looking at Dorset to move too and would love any insight from any locals. Where is best ? Where to avoid etc. We really like Dorchester, Bridport, parts of Weymouth or possibly Wareham area.

We are retiring but want to stay edge of a town or large village and relatively close to a place with train links to London. A first grandchild needs to be visited often :)

Any views welcome !

Thanks

Dave

Some nice areas around Christchurch/Bournemouth if your budget works.

We moved down to Verwood about 20 years ago so pleased we had, it rather depends how close to the coast you want to be and as the same as anywhere you need to miss certain areas,
Wimborne a great market town, as is Ringwood, Dorchester, Swanage, Lym Regis all worthy of consideration
Poole as with Weymouth got its great areas but some not so nice places, anywhere along the Jurassic coast really is great and some fantastic places to drive to, you need to spend a week traveling around that’s the best way to get a feel for what you’re looking for.

Cheers Bazza,

We are looking at places in the Preston/Overcombe end of Weymouth and south Dorchester this weekend, As well as a place in Sandford and edge of Wareham. Other places next on the list are Charlton Down and Tolpuddle areas and as far north as a couple of places up in Cheselbourne. The extra costs of Swanage, Lyme Regis etc are making them not for us.

We stayed in Dorchester a couple of weekends ago and liked it a lot. Have stayed around Swanage and Corfe a bit over the years so love the coast. Although my ex has just moved to Ferndown so that, and anywhere too close, is a no go :)

Thanks again

Dave

Sandford is very busy during the summer, I use that route for Swanage and the Coast a lot, Tolpuddle is smashing.

Bridport is ok too

The wareham area, Bere Regis, Stoborough, Sandford. I grew up there and got used to the summer traffic. I wouldn't look at Poole, last time there it looked a bit run down, but there are nice areas, same as anywhere. Some decent pubs in wareham where you can't get a mobile signal! And the rugby club is decent. If couldn't believe how much development has gone on over the last 10 or so years.

Ive lived in Bournemouth and loved it - great connections to London, a short drive from the new forest and a huge sandy beach!
I would also say Weymouth, Dorchester and Christchurch :)

I was stationed at the guided weapons and gunnery school at Lulworth for two years and apart from the ranges beng closed for long periods I believe it's one of the better places to live. Dorset with its seaside towns and beautiful countryside is hard to beat. Met the boss there in 1970 got married and rented a thatched roof cottage for a while just up from the cove, been back a few times and hasn't changed much at all. Wish I could go back, great county.

we have found a place we like in Stoborough so just outside Wareham. Any intel on that specific area you could share would be very cool.

Thanks

Dave

Have only ever passed through there but have to say anywhere around the Jurassic coast will be a great place to live.

Roaming around Malmesbury, Calne, Avebury, Westonbirt and many places in between we were constantly reminded of the Army Gunnery range on Salisbury Plain. Whenever we mentioned it the local people said "We don't hear it any more". I don't know how long it takes for you not to hear it although we had some friends who bought a house right next to the main railway line between Lincoln and the North and they said the same.
Perhaps the direction of the wind may have played it's part too.

Tony.

Hi Dave, a lovely place, great for walks and easy to get to Wareham, the liesure centre in Wareham not too far away, a good pool and gym + bar. The Kings Arms does good food and beer. Arne is just about a mile or 2 down the road, very scenic. you dont tend to get too much traffic through the village as the bypass takes most. the back roads to Corfe are great roads for a Zed :) Hope you find your place to settle.

Went to school in Wyke Regis (midway from Weymouth to Portland), that was a nice neck of the woods. A long time ago though.

Martin, thanks for that. We do like the place we have found. Just need to get it bought

With luck and a following wind we should be OK. In the meantime more travels and house visits this weekend as fall back options. Hope we dont find any real horrors in our search.

appreciate the insight, Dave
