Coloured grille slats...

No, not the M-Sport colours, before I anger anyone, but what do people think about this (excuse the awful photoshop skills)? Someone local to me is selling a pair of black kidney grilles and it gave me a jolt of inspiration.

(For context, I am going with an orange highlights theme on my car, although none is visible here! The calipers, strut brace, seatbelts and mat trims are all orange)

no need to apologise at all! I was asking for opinions I showed my mock-up to my wife and she said it looked like a slat had broken and I couldn't find a black one to replace it with

I think I see a full set of tango indicators there. Although I have been wrong in the past, 1982 I think it was.

The gills that came with the bonnet I bought some time ago had the Belgium colours on which looked ok, glad it was tape though as I was after a set of facelift ones with the chrome on the leading edge for a while but as said does not look right with just one slat try doing the whole lot might look more appealing.

There’s an E46 touring I drive past frequently that has had the kidney surrounds sprayed or wrapped in a matt metallic bronze colour. I think it looks great. I’m sure it’s something you can option on a new BMW. Orange slats are a no from me.

Tango indicators fine all black grilles also fine but the stripe needs to go
Zeds in general tend not to be pimped up Halfords style got to be a bit more upmarket and chic.
Look through the gallery you'll see a lot of really nice zeds from members ( dont need to be a flagship M model to be nice ) but additional m badges or m colour stripes tend not to be big ( unless they were meant to be there)
But at the end of the day every one of us may own a zed of some description but we all have different views on what's what colour , wheel style and trim wise so as others have said your zed your style.

Many years ago I painted the mesh in my gills silver, and I still think it looks better than the original black. I later had the kidney grilles painted in Hell rot 2 to match the rest of the car, and would never dream that the oriignal black plastic was anything to crave for! Unless you have an unhealthy fetish for originality, a little subtle colour or chrome (such as my Z8 washer nozzles) beats cheapo black plastic any time.
