Just had major work done on the engine ( see previous thread) and now have these codes. The Engine light has also come on.
Any ideas?

Not a Vanos expert but I would be looking at the inlet vanos for bad solonoid and or seals then look at fuel trims, usually fuel trims exceeded down to air leaks, not sure if the Vanos fault would have a contribution to fuel trims.

I'm no expert in such matters, but have you tried clearing the codes and see if they come back. Could it be part of the "bedding in process"? Seems like a no cost first step.

New seals have been fitted on the VANOS. I have reset the codes twice now but they keep coming back. I gave it 200 miles to bed in, so should have by now.

To determine if you have a dodgy solenoid swap them over, clear the codes and see if they reappear on the exhaust side. Also check that the shuttle valve behind the solenoid is clean and moves freely in its bore as they can stick.

2 things happen here, VANOS and fuel trims. VANOS is timing of valves and does not impact on fuel mixture/trims.

E3/E4 = 227/228 mixture deviations. You will need to check your fuel trims to see if its rich (negative numbers) or lean (positive numbers).

The VANOS advice you have been given is great.

Checks carried out today-
Pressurised smoke test on complete inlet system, no leaks detected.
Checked wiring between ecu and vanos solenoid, all ok.
Checked positive and switched earth to vanos solenoid and found ok.
Previously swapped solenoid from inlet to exhaust and triple checked cam timing.

Can anyone think of anything we have missed?

On the fuel trims check that the o2 sensor connections are not plugged into the wrong lead. So bank 1 plugged into dme bank 2 and visa versa. Seen that before. Dme keeps trying to trim mixture based on reading from wrong bank.

On vanos no idea.

Giving the cam sensors a clean may help.

Sorry, but have I missed something but shouldn't the company who did the work on the engine be sorting these problems out?
