Sorry if this has been covered previously, I do always search but on this occasion can't see anything.

I'm looking for recommendations for a bog standard clutch replacement. No trick stuff, just keeping it as it left the factory.

I believe the OEM manufacturer was both Sachs & LUK.

Are there any preferences between the two? Do Sachs & LUK make more than 1 type each? Which type if so?

Any other manufacturers worth looking at?

Looking for a complete kit at hopefully no more than £150, preferably £100 looking at this.

Cant tell you so much about bmw clutch but my 99 seat Alhambra tdi needed replaced 156k ( slave cyl fail clutch contamination) and my current 2003 Skoda superb tdi clutch replacement 226k ( dual mass fail )
Vw use luk as standard and both replacement were luk .
The Alhambra got sold at 321k with replacement clutch still fine
Skoda currently on 279k clutch ok .
So i have had no issues at at with luk clutch products.
Stephen.

Hi

I replaced the clutch and duel mass flywheel on my 2.0L car at about 97,000 miles. Used LUK parts and its been great. Have done about 10,000 miles on it now.

The Flywheel was replaced as it had blue hot spots on it and lots (circa 15 degrees) of twist between the two parts of the flywheel. You can measure the twist with the flywheel on the engine by pushing it one way, marking the teeth against engine (reference point), then pushing it the other way and counting the number of teeth that have gone past the reference point. A bit of math like number of teeth moved divided by the total number of teeth times 360 and you have the amount of twist in degee. 10 degree twist is the max spec.

There were two clutch kits that I could have fitted, One was for the 2.0 to 2.5 L cars, the other was for the 2.8 to 3.0 L cars. The later being a larger diameter. Both fit the standard duel mass flywheel

Do your research on the part numbers, I looked at lots of eBay listings and searched on the parts number references they list to get it all sorted. Sorry have lost my results otherwise they would be posted here.

Hope this helps

Regards

Murray

Thanks chaps. The standard clutch for a 2.2 is 230mm so I guess you are flagging that the 240mm for a 3.0 will also fit?

That's useful information. Although initially I had meant was there a budget and a premium clutch set with eg different lining material. Does anyone know this?

I think the answer is no. But you've got to be so careful picking your way around.

The LUK set seems to be cheaper than the Sachs so no obvious reason not to go for that.

It's actually just the release bearing that's gone. But I'd be silly not to do the whole thing while the gearbox is off. Including selector shaft seal and selector joints. Plus check the flywheel. I might even pop the lid off the gearbox to check the condition of the gears. Fuzz on Car SOS said it was easy doing that and I believe everything he says ;)

Hi Rob, I have fitted/driven two 3.0 z3's with a new sachs clutch kit (not including flywheel) and new LUK kit (not including flywheel) and I think the sachs kit felt ever so slightly heavier on the pedal, almost felt like it was more heavy duty, but if I hadn't driven both I would be just as happy with both (if that makes sense) I remember getting the LUK clutch dirt cheap from Euros on one of there weekend deals. Cant beat the feel on a new clutch
