Charcoal filter

Has anyone ever renewed the charcoal fume filter on the Z3 , the one beside the rear beam.
Should you, or is it a lifetime fitment. I have no problems with it that I'm aware of but doing my winter overhaul and cleaning up the bracket and just wondered.

I have no idea how you know if it needs to be replaced, but I see in my car’s service history it was replaced at 87k miles.

Had no idea this even existed!....but am guessing it should be replaced if you start to smell fumes?

Yes . Was reading up on it ,only replace if causing fumes in the car or it comes up as a fault code.

Far more dangerous is that a clogged charcoal filter can lead to an increased vacuum in the fuel tank, causing it to contract which can damage the fuel pump.

It's not a common problem but it can occur on high mileage cars. When you open the tank cap and hear a hissing sound, that might be an indicator for clogged filter

I'll have to look into how you test for that and whether the canister itself can be the issue or perhaps its supporting valves, hoses and control systems. My CRV has that breathing sound now and to my mind, that's a relatively new thing. Thanks!

I have a CRV as well and it’s always done that too for the last 80k miles, so assuming it’s not a problem

Thanks for that, ours is an 03 and we have accumulated 206K miles since we bought it, IMHO, what a great car !
Just not as much fun as my Z though.

I have never heard of anyone changing them. From what I understand they just help collect the fumes in the charcoal when stopped as the tank breaths. Then when the car is running it pulls these vapors(?) back into the system emptying the filter.

I have read that the one thing that damages them is when you overfill the tank and they fill with liquid gasoline, but I have no proof.

They have been fitted to millions of cars over the last who knows how many years and I dont know of any manufacture that lists service interval for them.
