Hi, my 1999 2.8 Z3 soft top does not operate reliably and it takes several tries before it will move. I have a replacement switch but not sure how to get the old one out
Any advice please
Michael

Read up on taking the centre console out. Once you have everything loose, you can lift up the rear end of the console and gain hand access to the back of the switch.

Are you sure it's the switch that you press? When I had exactly the same problem it turned out to be the brake light switch. Worth checking.

What Mint said, and there’s also a micro-switch in the roof frame that needs to be engaged. Worth checking first before you start dismantling the interior:thumbsup:

Yeah I would put my money on the brake light switch too it happened to me or the other switch on the top frame, I haven't heard about many soft top switched failing in any case you don't have to remove the centre console it should be possible to remove one of the blanks on that switch plate and put a finger through the hole and push it from behind

ANyone have details on that 'brake light switch'? My electric top has the same problem, and I blamed the switch itself but it doesn't feel right -- I often manage to get it going after I press the other switch, the brakes again etc etc...

Where is that brake microswitch? I have some contact spray I could try to use on it to see if it makes it better...

It's on the brake pedal supporting bracket. It's called a 'stop light switch' on RealOEM, item 7 on the diagram.
It has two sets of contacts in it but they are all sealed. Not sure you'd have much luck with contact cleaner:(

There is a trick to move the brake switch.
- push in the brake peddle and hold it there
- pull out the plunger
- pull out the red collar along the plunger
- press the two side clips in to release the switch

The red collar stops the side clips from being depressed, so if you don't get the collar out the switch will not come out.
