For what it's worth, I tried 2 reasonable quality after market cats (about £3/400 each) and neither worked sufficiently well to pass a MOT emissions test. Received refunds and then bought a new OEM cat which sailed through. Might save someone some pain; but not in the wallet!

BMW also allow almost as much as the cost of an aftermarket cat in part exchange against a new one. That says a lot IMO.

Hard to tell, some come from cars with a recent MoT
I'm after one after an MOT failure and the cat's definitely the problem due to a cheap aftermarket one failing so could be worth a go if you wanted to offload one!

You could try Schmiedmann (danish “mother” of genuine, OEM and used genuine BMW spare part. Used them three times already. Maybe the shipping charges will be off the charts though...?
