Whilst looking for a Z4 I found a very promising candidate just 7 miles from me at a 2nd hand car dealer. Never heard of them, but they have up to 500 cars in stock. They are pretty much in the middle of nowhere and I thought I'd take a look over the car. The place was immense, their parking lot probably bigger than the local Tesco Extra branch.

Initially the car was at the top end of the price range so would need to be impressive, and I'd need a good trade in against Rosie for it.

It's just sad when you turn up and find cars in such a poor state, when the advert pictures look so nice. It was a 2006 Individual Phoenix Yellow with yellow/black interior, 56k miles and BMW service history. The list of issues wasn't looking good for a car priced at £8,495. There were probably a few things I missed, but the salesman assured me that cars don't leave them in this condition and everything would be sorted

Alloys corroded badly on the inners. Not seen MV2's go quite that bad before.
Both rear tyres illegal
Both front tyres borderline MOT pass
Drivers door sill badly worn and needing a respray
Stone chips on the front bumper (to be expected I'd guess)
Discs corroded and getting close to minimum, I'd have said probably an MOT advisory.
Drivers seat backing was coming away
The interior was grubby, you could see it easily on the yellow leather parts

Oh, and it didn't have an MOT...

Thought I would play the numbers game with the sales guy as there was a nice car under all this, and if the price worked out then I'd definitely consider it. Usual hoo haa over trade in prices. Derisory offer on mine, so told him to try much harder. He comes back with the sales manager, and this is where it all got incredibly weird. He basically said the following to me.

Yeah, um, we don't really sell cars this old and it does need a few things doing to it which we aren't really prepared to do. How about I let you have it for trade price and you just take it - £7500.

This lead to a lively debate over the list of things it needed, and that £1000 off wouldn't have been trade value anyway. Told me I could take it or leave it, and if I didn't take it they were going to take it off sale and pass it through the trade. Now I'm really not stupid and I could guess that trade price would have been somewhere around £5.5 to £6k on this car. So he was still trying to make a couple of grand on it despite the condition.
I said no (obviously), so he said fair enough shook my hand and walked off. Even the salesman I was dealing with looked a little embarrassed and taken aback with how the sales manager was talking.

It has since gone from the website and Autotrader, so he was at least honest with that!

Makes you wonder how the last owner let the car get in that state given it was only doing 5-6k miles per year.

You did the right thing in walking away, I would have done the same as I'm sure most people would.

There's always someone who'll take it though

Phoenix yellow is great on a weekend / detailers car but for daily use that colour just looks ugly when it's dirty.
I know how much you like to wash your car Gaz but even you would the able to keep up with the daily twin bucket, anti grit mitt, clay bar, carnuba waxing, glazing sealing and blow drying that colour needs!

I ran a site stocking 1000 cars and it's all a matter of number's. They are not interested in you one iota but at a site that size I assume they probably took it in as a trade in and thought they'd try there luck with it. I left the trade because as a manager I could not talk to people as you have described him speaking to you. There's little wonder the motor trade has a bad name! You did right to walk away @GazHyde. I don't regret getting out of it at all, not a nice industry to be in or to have to deal with as a customer. I try wherever possible to buy private.

So he was prepared to let you drive that car away with illegal tyres and no MOT.

Had you killed yourself on the way home in an accident he'd likely end up in jail.

And there is no such thing as a trade sale from a dealer to a consumer, whatever he cares to write on the invoice.

Your statutory rights, and the sale of goods act over rides anything he writes on the invoice.

The only time a "trade sale" applies is if it's being sold on to another motor dealer.

Dealers like this boil my pee, and it's these people that give the trade a bad name.

Totally agree.

Unfortunate for me I'm still in it, but as a buyer.

So I have to listen to them talking utter crap.

Not all of them, a mate of mine has a garage and show room and I go there quit often for a coffee and a look round.
Young couple came in, she was heavily pregnant, the bloke had 2000 in his pocket and the car he was looking at was priced at 3500.
He sold it to them for 2000 and said he took a hit.

It's not these people that give the trade a bad name, the trade itself gives it a bad name, and the people who will change it are the trade themselves. Yes, I'm in the motor trade not retail anymore. It's the cut-throat business of selling cars which brings this about and also the reason why Z's are worth a lot less here than in mainland Europe.

The motor trade gets away with it because it's so unregulated.

Most dealers don't even know the law.

Trading standards are happy to walk around the local markets looking for people selling imported toothpaste but they only ever visit car dealers upon receipt of a complaint.

The sale of cars concerns peoples safety, trading standards should get off their botties and go make sure dealers are educated, and watched. They don't....

Nice one, what are the chances of me picking up a nice Merc SL for a couple of grand if I get the other half to shove a cushion up her frock and put a sad face on ?=))

Anyway back on track.

Most car dealers (not all) are oxygen thiefs!

I've been lucky with my car purchases, but I like to think it's partly due to not letting myself be pressured into a sale. I bought my Zed from a dealer and it's been a great car. I got it for a good price too, although that may have been because I bought it in December.
