Can't find correct crankshaft sensor

Hi all,

Car in question is a 1998 Single Vanos 2.8 - S249JTF

I am pulling my hair out trying to replace a crankshaft sensor, I have bought several expensive ones Delphi, Siemens VDO and I've even managed to find a second hand one form a similar aged car.

The issue is that none of them work, all crank no start - only the original which has cracked/melted (which is why I'm replacing it in the first place) the reason I have come to is that they appear to be slightly different. The codes on the cables are 1 digit apart from the old and new ones: S103567002 (old) vs s103557002 (new). However when I search for the old code, I only get a bunch of Russian websites or pages relating to the new one.

I'm at a loss, I know if I put the old one back in it'll at least start but with the new ones the car doesn't start!

Next step is looking to buy a newer ECU for the car in the hope that there's something to do with this particular setup?

Any info anyone has would be greatly appreciated!

There are two types on the single Vanos M52, the early one on the front crank pulley and the later one at the back of the engine under the starter motor.

As yours is an S plate it will be the later type under the starter, M52TU style. The original sensor with the long lead is NLA. Instead, you need the E46 type part number 12141709616, and the extension cable 12514592703.

When you crank the engine, does the rev counter needle jump up a little? If it does, then the DME is receiving a crank sensor signal.

If this helps I sent my ECU to ECU testing look them up on YouTube great company they will collect ecu from you to test it it's around £60 I got my one rebuilt as that is what I wonted them to do total cost of rebuild was £280 that included vat and delivery it took 5 days and came with a lifetime guarantee with unlimited mileage and was just plug and play

I have had the battery out for a month or so, perhaps some sort of damage to the ECU? Might be worth buying one of the modded ones?

FYI problem was resolved by replacing Idle Control Valve it was jammed open with gunk! Seems to exhibit the same symptoms as a faulty sensor!
