I can probably say everyone will be glad to get out of2020 we had nothing planned except a few phone calls, but Sarah’s sister was walking alongside her daughter who was riding her horse and a car came to fast and couldn’t stop and hit her she’s in Stoke hospital in a induced coma after a op for a bleed on the brain. Just posting this as a reminder whatever your feelings are towards horses ,cyclists ,motorcycle riders or pedestrians they’re a lot more vulnerable than you are.We drive around here with 4x4s a lot slower than in dry conditions but I’m amazed by the number of people who seem oblivious of how the weather changes how you should drive . Let’s hope for better time next year everyone .

Crikey mate, best wishes and a speedy recovery

That's awful Hugh. I hope she makes a full recovery.

Too many drivers have no respect for other road users - they forget we all have a right to be there. Sadly, I bet the driver responsible believes it is not in any way their fault. Makes me so angry when horse riders and cyclists get abuse or put in danger.

Ouch - best wishes for speedy recovery.

Lots of horses around here, always slow down, give a wide wide berth, and usually get a 'nod' acknowledgement. You never know what can spook a horse so let them have some room....

I hope she makes a full recovery and the driver gets charged for dangerous driving. As I was leaving my village to go into town there were a couple of walkers who had to jump off the road onto the verge thanks to some driver who never slowed down and had no intention of giving room.

Its great to see that almost without execption horse riders wear high viz these days, and I was amazed a couple of years ago when a friend of my sons showed me the amount of protective gear she wears when riding.I can not recall when a horse rider failed to wave when you slow down for them.
My main bi*** on country lanes is coming accross black bikes being riden by a rider all dressed in Black. Its as if they dont want to be seen.
Just hoping she soon recovers.

It happens often when someone drives up right close behind them. Had it happen in front of me a few weeks ago. Two riders coming the opposite way. One towards the middle of the road protecting a young rider on the inside. I all but stopped a little distance away as I saw car roar up to stop to within 5 yards of the rear horse - the one in front got spooked and reared up running into the middle of the road. Took it 15-20 seconds to settle again. Had I not stopped and waited there would have been an accident.

Salt had been spread on the roads around the New Forrest area which several horses immediately happily started licking it .....unfortunately this then resulted in 4 horses being killed after being hit by a Land Rover There is a 40mph limit in the area...I wonder if the car was speeding?

Back to the OP, hope she recovers very quickly.

Thats a lot of damage. I just feel for the animals

Thanks all for your concern, the latest news is that she is stable but still in a coma.of course no one can visit because of the virus but I think they are going to try and wake her tomorrow fingers crossed.it was quite a relief to work this morning to take your mind off things as our nieces lost their dad about 9years ago and it must of been traumatic seeing her mum run over. The police closed the road for hours as it was in the village outside the school.

I’m very sorry to read this Hugh. My thoughts are with your family and you.

Sending our best wishes to you all Hugh and hoping for the best possible outcome.

Tony and Shirl.

At last it’s getting taken seriously

I am so sorry to hear about the reckless actions of a driver. My daughter goes out on her horse a couple of times a week and it scares me thinking about it.

I drive super carefully down country lanes as also ride a bike along those lanes when I am in keep fit mood.

I always wear hi viz when out on the bike but still feel vulnerable sometimes. You wouldn’t get me on a horse though

Dave

Not the same event I’m afraid. Luckily our niece and her horse were unhurt physically. Sarah’s sister is still in hospital but has been moved from Stoke to Shrewsbury to be nearer home and is making steady progress so good news on that front. Thanks for all your good wishes. Hugh

Just seen this, hope she makes a full recovery Hugh. It’s a reminder to all of us when approaching blind corners in the lanes.
I gave up cycling after 17yrs when my son and myself had to jump a high kerb when being overtaken on blind bend
by a lorry who had to pull in sharply to avoid head on collision with on comming vehicle.
Such a shame she was knocked down, at least she was there with her daughter, good parenting in my book.

RHA,ROY.
