Had a dash cam for 6 months. I see and record incidents from down right stupid and careless to dangerous driving almost every day. I've only once resorted to taking video to the police but that was something that was way beyond acceptable stupidity - deliberately driving over a 20 foot grass verge and then over the pavement to miss out a mini-roundabout. However, I don't believe anything was done about it despite being supported by video from a garage forecourt. I reported it because its a section of path that local infant school children use (from the school where I am governor) and would have been using just a short while before. The driver couldn't see if anyone was just around the corner - the outcome could have been deadly. It is at one end of a stretch of road that has seen at least 10 killed and dozens injured over a few years. The police here don't seem to give a s**t even when incontrovertible evidence is given to them. It will take more deaths I suspect. They certainly don't seem to be receptive to use of dashcam footage. They wouldn't even take a verbal account of the incident - I had to fill out a ten page form! Maybe I should have called 999.
In six months I've had drivers try and force their way in by overtaking on a roundabout and cutting in to a single carriageway on three occasions. Drivers overtaking in to and on the outside of blind bends. One driver who swerved and cut right across 4 lanes on an island just 2 feet in front of me to got to the exit they wanted. I have seen lorry drivers texting (one as he came up to and nearly running over a cyclist). The usual undertakers on motorways. It's only when you get it on camera that you see how appalling lots of the driving on our roads is.
Just use your dash cam to protect your interests with insurers - the police don't care what you get unless I suspect someone is actually injured. What I don't know is, if should you be involved in an incident yourself, can the police can seize images from your dash cam without a court order if you refuse to hand it over? It is your property as is any copyright. Can it be used against you without your permission?
