@Sean d In my experience the C110 does not fully work on a prefacelift 2.8. I have tried various code readers belonging to other members (including Lee and Pgunter when on the first Euro tour to Holland).
Earlier this year I bought a Foxwell NT520 reader that does everything I need it to. It reads all the BMW range including Rolls Royce and Mini.
I took mine on my recent visit to see Hugh and Sarah @miller1098 in Wales and demo'd it to Hugh on both of his zeds, a prefacelift 2.8 with the facelift M52TU engine and his S50 Z3m. It performed a full diagnostic scan on both cars. Both my zeds are prefacelift 2.8 and works fully on both.
The Foxwell NT520 has been updated by the NT530 now but uses the same program. They cost around £150, a lot more than the C110 but it works.
Mine reads all BMW up to 2018, I have all the recent updates so will also read all E89 range too.

I keep forgetting the extent of this issue with pre-facelift cars. And that the Foxwell is the answer.

Can I ask you guys a question as I have a theory. The C110 works fine on my brother’s 1.9 Dec 98 build car. So it might be that MY 99 (Sep>98?) cars on are okay.

Also I’m making a loose association that if the car has the later 3-button key instead of the early diamond key it could be the indicator as I would imagine the change in key was inline with substantial wiring and electrical changes?

@mrscalex , my 2.8 is Nov 98 build with twin vanos M52Tu engine and yes I have the 3 button keys , I have issues with the c110 and also have BMW 1.4.0 on a laptop reading all modules , my son in law has a snap on scanner but only goes back to year 2000 BMW so no joy with that
