Hi Guys
Do any members own a z3 and a z4 or have owned both in the past.
I’m tempted by a z3, always like the classic look, but should I buy a z4 instead?
upto £10k to enjoy.
thanks

This is a very subjective question that cant be answered with any degree of certainty as we all have different opinions, requirements and likes/dislikes

I have owned and sold since 2016
Z3M & 2.8 Great car(s)
Z4 e85 Alpina (Didn't like it)
Z4 e89 (Great car does every thing I want)

Now the first two cant really be compared with non M or Alpina variants for performance etc but fundamentally the same car.

If I was going to buy another it would be the e89 every time. (I currently still have one) Not much point in explaining as the reasons are mine and many including you wont agree with me. For example I would only give negative answers to e85 ownership and there would be an avalanche of e85 owners who would stone me as they love their cars and their positive responses would be completely fair in their opinion.

If you have 10k firstly decide what it is you want from the car, you can afford a Z3 and both Z4 variants depending on condition model etc.

I would suggest you go look and test drive them all in as many different engine sizes and make your mind up on your favourite. 🤷‍♂️

With £10k to spend I'd say you've hit the jackpot narrowing your search to the Z3 & Z4 range - now you're only problem is deciding which is best for you.

I never owned a 2 seater car before 2018 and this year took ownership of my 16th Zed and 7th Z3 - a 1998 1.9 Z3 often referred to as the M44; my first was what is often referred to as the MCoupe (a 1996 E86) and I've had everything in between including 3 E89's and 5 E85’s.

Everything that follows is personal preference so please don't take it as a rigid guideline:

1) Are you looking to enjoy the car on long journeys with you other half - buy an E89
2) Are you looking for something to predominantly enjoy solo with a heavy focus on performance and handling - buy an E86
3) Are you looking for something similar to point 2 above but with a desire for a roadster experience - buy an E85
4) Are you looking for something similar to point 3 above but with a more nostalgic look and feel - buy a Z3

In short they are all great and if you buy well an enjoyable place to be. Also I wouldn't underestimate the benefit of forums like this and the ownership communities in general - they just add to the overall experience and serve as a great knowledge resource.

Most importantly have fun in your search, enjoy your purchase and remember the most important thing - with these cars rather than consider yourself as the owner it's more appropriate to simply act as it's current custodian

With a 10k budget, I'd be looking for Z4 3.0si Coupe E85. Wouldn't cost you all of 10k but between 5-10k. They didn't make very many and if you get a nice one, you'll make your money back in 3 years.

7k will get you some nice and a little Chang for wheels, new parts and a nice exhaust.

Or

You can have my Z3 2.8i for 10k, no problems. 😂

Do you like spending time alone at the weekends fixing things? are you easily addicted to on-line forums? have you ever dreamed of owning a fault code reader or wondered what a DISA actually is …if so then Z3 ownership is for you! If not I’d get an E89 😁

Z3 has more classic soul!...Z4 more a modern convertible...both are very reliable.....I bought a fault code reader years ago and never had the need to use it.....I had a Z3M.....then a Z4 which seemed a lot of car for £7K...then back to a Z3 a Jap import 3.0 Auto which was an easy cruiser but I got bored...now a 2.8 widebody manual which I am really enjoying and will try and keep...

As ever give them a drive and see which you feel more comfortable with...and maybe try a Eunos!

You’ll still need that code reader for an E89, maybe just not as often =))
