I've been seeing a few of these article's on this subject lately, as it is now imminent (in Europe, so guess we'll get a flavour of it in some way shape or form). This isn't the best or most comprehensive article, just the one to hand . . .

Cars in the Middle East have beeped at you when going above 120 km/h (70mph) now for a decade or more. I get that. But it's the automatic braking that's new that I find alarming?

Imagine being half way through an overtaking manoeuvre and having the car apply brakes on you.

I might be keeping my Zed forever then . . .

Am I the only one ?

As you say Alex that could be dangerous indeed.

Tony.

Many years ago I had a Renualt Safrane (a really comfortable drive , car wrote off when a 525 hit me square on the side , bent roof and floor pan)

It had a speed limiter I knew nothing about and must have accidently set it. Proceeded to overtake a truck and it refused to go any faster and I just got back in the traffic, scared the life out of me. Many car since have it , but I will NEVER use it,use Cruise Control a lot but NOT the limiter.

A lot of cars have limiters I believe….. the two worst ones are ‘wife’ and ‘partner’
There was a third called ‘girlfriend’ but these are easily removed

I have a works van, a Ford Transit Connect that's limited to 62mph. We get paid from when we leave home until we get back home as you can guess there's no sense in rushing around during working hours :D

Generally 62mph is fast enough in most instances. I struggle to get past lorries sometimes even when they are themselves limited to between 56 and 60 but the speed in my vehicle is limited by the fuel flow rather than having the brakes applied.

When (….!). my 2.8 project is built it will be limited to 50mph…..Reason? @Lee once took me out on the Basingstoke Raceway , (sorry ring road ) in his 2.8 ……enough said !!!!

At least for now, these limiters don't apply brakes, but reduce fuel flow so the car slows gradually and it can be overridden by pressing the accelerator harder. That's still not ideal for overtaking, but you shouldn't exceed the limit even during overtaking, in theory.
What's more worrying for me is that the cameras often pick up signs from side roads or outdated roadworks which would mean continually slowing and speeding up in urban areas.

Luckily for now the UK has already said they wont be following it, but it is only a matter of time before they try to implement something.

Stick to owning old cars @D

The RUSH song , Red Barchetta , seems to becoming true .

Yes. Girlfriend v1.0 can be removed. But a friend of mine had a lot of hassel when he installed Girlfriend 2.0 without first uninstalling Girlfriend 1.0 and had no end of system clashes.

Another friend of mine upgraded Girlfriend 1.0 to Wife 1.0 that worked fine for a while but then, in a moment of maddness, he attempted to install Girlfriend 2.0 which resulted in Wife 1.0 uninstalling itself taking all MS Money files with it.

My daily driver a Suzuki Scross has intelligent speed limiter and radar assisted braking but you have to switch it on everytime you start the engine
the only time i ever use it is when i am a place were there a lot speed cameras etc , i once had a Vauxhall Combo van at work which was limited to 69 mph and it was like hitting a brick wall when you hit the limit

My MB GLA has radar assisted braking. Or so the manual tells me. But as far as I know it's permanently on. I haven't figured out how to switch it off. It's never braked though so maybe it doesn't work anyway. I think I'd be carsick if it suddenly applied the brakes.

It's also got a beeper that sounds if it thinks I'm not paying attention to the road. No idea how that works. Maybe the radar can detect good lookin ladies on the sidewalk (or a nice zed at the side of the road) and assume I'm not paying attention to the road.
