Hi Everyone,

I just replaced the water pump and thermostat but when I was tightening up the blue plastic radiator drain plug [lower passenger side] I tightened it up too tight and broke the head off!

Can I just leave it like this and deal with it next time I need to drain the coolant or should I resolve this immediately? I am happy to leave it like it is.

I took the car for a spin and all is well - no leaks.

Thanks.

If you have no leaks then you should not worry too much Coops. It's one of those jobs that want to be sorted ASAP , but not an emergency.

Hi Cooper I'm about to do this job too. Plus belts etc. Any pointers or anything I should know.. Apart from being careful with the drain plug lol.
Cheers

Hi, sure there are a few things :) It is not that hard unless you get stuck on something... The whole job took me 2 hours which is slow [first time].

**Go to Pelican Parts online, choose BMW, then choose How To..., and find the Z3 e36/7 segment, click on that and read how to do everything first. They have all the great tips required including photos.
**Use a socket set 13 mm I think to remove the drain, don't try to use a screw driver. After draining put it back in carefully not too tight.
**I did not drain the entire system. I just drained the radiator and saved the coolant. You will find about 4 litres will come out plus another half a litre when you pull out the pump so be ready with a bucket underneath. You can remove the drain plug all the way and the radiator will slowly drain so slowly undo the overflow tank filler cap and you can control how fast the coolant comes out :)
**Remember the fan is a left hand thread. I highly recommend that you spray WD40 or something on the nut and let it soak for several days before attempting to remove the fan, it can be a mongrel. Watch where your tools [special tools required] are so you don't accidentally damage the VANOS housing [or your knuckles] when removing the fan.
**I used my torque wrench with the 16mm socket to get the best leverage when pulling back on the belt tensioner to take tension off the pulley, don't fully remove the belt unless you are going to replace it. Keep a photo on hand so you know how to refit it. You think you can remember then it all goes pear shaped when you try later!
**I put the front of the car on ramps when doing this job. A standard 10L bucket fits underneath easily.
**I did not remove the Vanos/engine lifting bracket, I just removed the upper nut and the lower bolt and you can wiggle the thermostat out easily - why remove something that doesn't have to be touched I say!
** I was fortunate that I could pull out the water pump with my bear hands. Some people have to use bolts to get it out but Pelican Parts tells you how to do it.

I hope all goes well.

Cheers, yea I already bought the special fan tool and even with oil spray it was tough to get loose. Did it though. That's as far as I've got as I need a spare day to do it. Did you have any problems bleeding the system afterwards?

No problems bleeding. Just fill up the return reservoir and it all drains in nicely, only had about 1 litre I didn't put back in. Took the car off the ramps and made up some extra coolant and filled her up. So, about 5 L out and 5 L in should be all good!

It is worth getting a new radiator drain plug anyway as they become brittle. I sheared mine when I replaced the water pump and thermostat. I then had to remove the radiator which I had not needed to do previously, to drill out the broken off plug. :)

Thanks. That is what I think I must do as well but I will leave it until I do some other work. Really, the previous owner put the damn GREEN coolant in the car which is a big no-no as it makes all the plastics brittle. So, when I get around to doing a complete flush I will get the new plug. Damn shame they didn't use a metal one but I suppose the engineers know best eh?

Now, I need to get one from somewhere. I hate getting such a small item from the dealers.

Good tip thanks. I'll get one. How do you drain the whole system as I have enough bmw blue Coolant and de ionised water for the whole lot. I heard about a plug on the engine? Cheers

Well just after I posted my last message I checked the post and my new tank arrived, on advice from another member. I believe it may have the drain plug you're referring to? Is this correct?

someone cut me down If I am wrong here but it should not be de ionised water as it will try and get the ions back and will grab them from the block ect, I used water from the rain butt as we have hard water here and used a water filter on the tap, I think it was distilled water rather than de ionised that is best to use.
p.s
I just had a quick look on the net about de ionised vs distilled and its full of so many opinions it made my head ache lol

The drain plug I refer to is on the radiator, very bottom on the left. It is blue plastic. I have the M54 6 cylinder 3.0i engine and I also do not recognize the part in the photo. BMW part number

Oh, I see. On the radiator. This is the expansion tank, you all had me worried but it's the right part.

Red is what you're referring to and blue is what I've got. So I may get a plug from the dealer. This is from realoem.com. From my 2.8
