I fitted new pads on the back axle of the wife's M today, good quality Brembo's from Euro car parts at a good price. I also picked up a clutch slave cylinder for a 325i that has a slightly longer stroke than the original one. I am hoping that this will make the clutch bite point a bit further from the floor and maybe make the effort needed to press a bit less for the wife in to the bargain. What could possibly go wrong? :)

Me too. It has been done before so it should be ok. The slave cylinder bore is slightly smaller so in theory I will be pushing the same volume of fluid through a narrower hole over a slightly longer distance. In practice I expect the effort to be about the same but the clutch plates to free earlier in the pedal stroke making gear changes easier. Or it will be a complete shambles! I do not have the theoretical ability of Pingu, just seat of the pants try it and hope for the best.

I was going to service the car myself and fit the new clutch slave cylinder and new Earls hose but then I had second thoughts that I would devalue the car at sale time so it is going into our local indie tomorrow while I am off on The Vale of Belvoir run. The garage does not open on Sunday but the boss cannot sit at home so is coming in to do it. He is old school so the job will be right, and the service book gets filled in.

We are currently in Saint Quinten on the way to the Italian Z3 meeting again. The clutch is much better than it was as it bites a bit higher off the floor and strangely it seems a bit lighter as well. I think I can recommend this upgrade using a 325i slave cylinder. I am well chuffed but I think I can get it even better with a bit of faffing about when we get home.

Thanks chaps. The clutch is way better. Just arrived in Chamonix Mont Blanc for a 2 night stopover before going through the tunnel. The plan was to go to the top of the mountain tomorrow but the bloody lift is out of action.
Last night we stayed in a swanky chateau just outside a town called Beaune. I did not realise how swanky until a few million quids worth of supercars rolled up for the night. They were in a club on some sort of tour and let us into the line up for their photos, and they thought our Z was beautiful!
