I'm with the RAC and I get personal membership for the wife and me, which covers us for any vehicle we drive or are passengers in (or on, because includes motorcycles) up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight. I also get cover for a specific vehicle as long as the owner lives at the same address, so my son's car is covered too. All that weighed in at about £160.

It sounds a lot but if you were to break down on a motorway , it would cost all that and more to get towed off if you didn't have any cover.

You could try Green Flag or Gem and most insurance companies offer breakdown cover as an add on to their policies.

We've been with Green Flag for about 20 years now.
Had to use them on 3 separate occasions and their service was excellent.
Dot & I get "personal cover" - any car in which we are driver or passenger is included.
The 2 other cars in the family are "nominated" vehicles whose registration is covered.
And the cost? 4 cars for £112/year
I haven't managed to beat that (yet)
:ymdevil:

I'm same as maurice i have cover with my bank account at HSBC. When i had a tyre
puncture back a couple of months ago and i had trouble releasing the wheel
they were with me within the hour, not bad! I think i pay about £17 a month but
it doesnt cover from the home i have to be at least a mile away.
Oh the cost does cover me for other benifits too like holiday travel insurance, and life cover. ect.

We are with Green Flag via the Caravan Club known as Mayday. This is comprehensive cover and includes personal cover for the two of us and also what is called double journey cover for the caravan. This give the option of continuing to holiday destination and then bringing the outfit home at the end of holiday if the car can't be fixed. This costs £90 and includes our 3 cars but excludes home start.
I have been with them or their earlier versions for 40+ years and only needed them once, and that was ex wife after we separated.Unfortunately their service was so good I almost complained. :-q :D

I think in the last 8-10 years ive used the AA 3 times... once was in the isle of white, the day before we were due to get the ferry home!! ( had minor accident where our golf at the time broke a supension arm ) every time they have been great and im so glad i was covered as i have no idea how we would have got home without them..

Does make you think just how much you have payed over the years though!

You'll be surprised how many people just pay up at the higher price. I have the same problem with my car & bike insurance every year. I.E. Bike insurance: £360, 1 10 min phone call to insurance company, £190. Go figure!!

I am with the AA through the bank I have used them quite a few times for turning off/ diagnosing warning lights, very useful on my wife's Porsche! And obviously the recent breakdown.

I join at the roadside if I break down :D

As long as you are a certain distance from home then it's valid as soon as you sign up, or was. Then you can use the intro discounts they offer to get you in.

Never take the first price the AA quote
I always get them to knock down the price
i always quote their interent price
I pay approx £250, i have their breakdown insurance for
three vehicle as well as the full breakdown service, for me
and the wife, it covers the cost of repairs up to
a specified amount, also covers batteries which has come in
handy, i had my batteries x2 replaced on my van at £130 each
i believe its about £120 to be towed off the motorway

As they say 'a very Nice man' :coolsteer)

Same thing happens to me every year, I've been with AA 25+ years but every year, same ritual, get renewal quote, look on internet, get price off there, ring up and ask for internet price and get it... every year same thing. I've had many conversations with them about looking after their existing customers better but get told same thing every year, the quote goes out as is, for anyone that rings up they will always match on line price.... Simples..... but annoying :|

I think they pray on people forgetting they've had there renewal as I did last year.. And I only realised I'd payed over £100 when I got my bank statement..

Your right though they shouldn't do it in the first place...

I've never paid for cover on a car and (tempting fate here) never broken down. Unless you call running out of petrol when 3 miles from home... :))

Had cover on company cars and likewise never used it.

If I had a problem i'd call a friend of a friend who has a transporter, or get out some greenbacks and pay, probably through the nose...but lets assume i've saved over £3k by not paying the AA I should be quids in. 8-}
