I had a car in today to fit a new exhaust back box and as usual while it was up in the air I had a nosey around it. These front brake discs had seen better days.:(

I had a look on "Check if a car is tested" and it expires on Oct.5th.

There was a time when a tester could fail discs in that condition, but, as always the motor trade shot itself in the foot as garages were using that to "fail" brakes which were still very serviceable (ripping people off) and now, provided these did not give excessive fluctuation on test (and even these may not!) and gave enough effort then you have to pass and advise. Crap really, isn't it?

You spotted that damage to the inner lip of the alloy too. High speed blowout waiting too.

It's a steel wheel Paul and, you might be surprised to know, I can pass and advise that as the tyre bead seal isn't affected. Having said that, if I removed that wheel to change those front brakes I would beat the s*** out of that rim to straighten it.:)

To me that's crazy. You must be able to feel that through the steering.

Not always mate, you can perversely get good even braking even with discs in that state but you would have excessive "fade" once they got hot, but you don't test them like that. Brake rollers run at a brisk walking pace and if you use a decelerometer you do that test at approx. 20mph. Very often you will get rear discs which are shiny bright on the outer face and corroded and pitted on the inner one and they will pass quite easily. Basic MINIMUM requirement don't forget.;)

This is exactly what happened with our Tiguan, good looking even wear on the outside, crap and pitted on the inside :(

Probably never looks at it except to open the door. most people these days don't even wash the car themselves, just down to the nearest bunch of East Eurpoeans with a bucket and rag.

But Mike @mwpe 'it passed its MOT' so it must be ok. Is what they would say. I prefer what an ex taxi inspector used to say... that was on the particular day in question. You as the driver are responsible for the other 364 days.

Why is that? I was under my MGB V8 the other day and the front discs are exactly like that. Look fine seen through the wheel, but are well worn on the inside surface, both sides of the car. Another winter job!

Possibly spray from the road with gravel and debris hitting the inside edge. The outer protected by the wheel.

My guess is that the outside of the disc cools quicker than the inside and the damp is gone sooner.
