Hi, I am in the market for a Z3, 2.8, Manual, wide body, with air-conditioning, less than 100k miles, valid MOT, NOT CAT-N, would prefer NOT black leather.
Looking for a sound car but happy if there are scratches, dents or flaking paint.
Within 50 miles of Berkshire.

Welcome. You could change your listing from For Sale to Wanted. Also a CAT N on a Z3 can be equivalent to scratched bumper or a full ashtray.. i wouldn't discount them. There is a lovely 3.0 for sale that is CAT N on the forum

I used to have a cat N Mercedes 300TE loverly car with all the extras. Bought it really cheap and did many many comfortable miles. Never had a problem with insurance although I knew when it came to sell that Cat N would put off many buyers. Actually sold it back to the local MB indie that I bought it off.

I'd have no problem with a Cat N. But if you want to sell it will put many people off. Potential buyers will do the online AA History check and just see the words "Write Off".

I appreciate that insurance companies will "write off" a decent car for the smallest reason, I just don't want the additional pain when I eventually come to sell it.

Agree with that.
All I hear nowadays is "a cat car is Ok, the insurance write them off for no good reason". Cat cars are cheaper, yes, but not cheap enough IMO to be viable. A lot of people will still see a 'Cat' marker as trouble (which is a fair assumption IMO), so why buy one when there are plenty that haven't been written off?

ALL Cat cars that are put back on the road are for one reason only.....for someone to make money on them. There is no other reason for doing it.

Cat n im my opinion depends in a few things what the cat n was for exactly would be the first thing i repaired the front end of a zed 3 earlier this year for a forum member that was a cat n now it had damaged front so
Front of bonnet
Front panel
Full bumper cover with fog lights grilles etc
Bumper support bar.
Offside headlight.

That was just to get it back on riad still has some scuffs and dings.

This is Lynne's zed written off as cat d on the old scale for 2 paint tins full if screws and nails came off a collapsed garage shelf one going through the windscreen the other the bonnet.
Owner bought back got salvage got bmw to repair kept another 6 yrs ( spoke to previous owner) so different reasons for the same result .

This leads me to the second factor and that is how much you are paying for what you are buying and what it may have been through that Turquoise Green zed above cost me £800 with rear window damage and running fault.

Rest of it in very decent condition so once the faults fixed more than worth what i paid ( so needs to be decent value at at -40% or so on market prices)
Which leads to the last couple of things first is resale value less buyers harder to find.
The second is if you crash your previously written off car and it is going to be written off a second time most insurance companies will Not give you the car back it will get binned and you will get the payout as they dont want it on road with 2 write offs against it.

Stephen.
