I had a problem with a friends 2008 Z4 last week in that the heater blower would only work on 1st speed, the AC would not work ( I did a re-gas to make sure it should and found 200g excess gas in the system) and the HRW inoperative amongst other issues. @GazHyde pointed my in the direction of the BMW transport mode (thank you !) and after doing some research it turned out this was the problem, caused by a new battery fitted very recently. I'm assured it was a fluke that it kicked back into this mode as the cars were/are taken out of it upon delivery to dealers.
Anyway all is now good and we were able to do this operation at work with the equipment we have on site.

I also have "Carly" which can code a replacement battery to the newer BMW's.
Why the hell do they need to complicate such things nowadays?
Mate, I honestly don't know. It's crap like this which is making my retirement day seem so far away Pete. I really don't like cars that much any more.:(;)

Sorry I realise this was put to bed last year ha did you say the “Carly” could reset the transport mode? I’m having a similar problem and was planning to buy a Carly anyway for things unrelated to this but if I can sort this too will be a bonus... any ideas?

The software on cars is so complex and distributed across many controllers that communicate with each other, there is no way that even dealers can cope with or understand many problems. Only diagnostic tools stand a chances of getting to the bottom of things. Even then the ODBC coding definitions can be used in non-OEM diagnostic tools. Many of the software driven configuration items can only be exposed in OEM systems but even then only a few can be seen. There will be many others embedded in the software by the designers that you can’t see.

A box of spanner’s doesn’t get you anywhere close to understanding problems. Given the complexity of them, car diagnostics are incredibly poor. I can tell you that a £30k DAB radio transmitter has way more diagnostic capabilities than your average car. Protectionism is the root of it all.

I had the same problem with my 07 3.0si. Carly could see the issue, clear the code (temporarily) but didn't fix anything. I installed ISTA+ on an old laptop to fix the issue. More modules were in transport than just the AC and Carly didn't see those.
