Does anyone have a handy Z3 engine bay diagram that names the components please? I'm new to this mechanics business (uh-oh) and have searched the RealOEM site, which is helpful, but you need to know what you're looking for. I'm what you call a visual learner, so diagrams with notes would be useful, I can do my research from there.

There's actually compartively little in the engine bay. Well in terms of major operational units/sub-systems.

You may be better reading up one system at a time. Starting with the systems that are more likely to require attention. Would suggest you try and find articles on following and these will lead you to identifying around the engine bay.
  • Diagnostics port - #1 thing to find after your level/filler points oil etc
  • MAF & intake hoses - intake hoses often split and cause vacuum leaks
  • Water pump & thermostat - replacement always recommended if history is unknown
  • DISA (incl. throttle body & idle control valve) - DISA will wear out eventually, particularly on 6 cylinder. Other 2 require removal to service
  • VANOS (if 6 cylinder) - hardened seals impact performance of all cars unless already done
  • CCV
  • Other vacuum lines.
If you learn up on these you will most likey come across the remaining things lurking in the engine bay. But these are the main things you're likely to want to give attention to.
