Dear Friends,
My BMW Z3 has been having a gear/shift change problem and am wondering if I will have a gearbox/ mission O/H. My problem is mainly 2nd gear sift is not smooth. Some time it sifted smoothly but most of the case not. 4th gear is very hard to shift but at least it moved from 3 to 4 straightly.

When an engine is off , 2nd gear seems ok but 4th is the same problem. 3rd is also a similar problem

I already have done a transmission oil change and clutch plate replacement but it did not make the problem resolved.

What parts should be replaced upon O/H? I guess the 2nd and 4th synchronizer is a high priority but s*** pin and shift linkage also must be replaced?

Any advice is appreciated.
Regards,
Kenny

With regards to shift linkages, I have done a full replacement on my 2.0L manual Z3. In neutral the gear lever sit in the middle nicely. To the right is a shift detent pin for shifting into 5th gear. There is 35mm left sideways movement to get to the 1st/2nd gear line. Before I did the shift linkage replacement work, the left sideways movement was a lot more. What is yours like? This may give you an idle if a shift linkage replacement job is needed on your Z3.

Thanks for your advice. It is nice to hear you have done a full replacement. I think my shift lever sit in a neutral position nicely. In this case, no need to replace a detent pin? I should focus on others ? I guess a synchronizer and gear shift fork might be replaced unfortunately.
