Next in the shed is a stunner, a very rarely seen black Z3M. @BillH We’re sure we’ve seen this car before the plate looks familiar. Anyway we started off doing the seat bushes at the same time we did Boisie’s and found they had been done before but the blocks were a loose fit.

Here she is.
1AFA038E-6637-4921-800A-4CD28F33CC4E.jpeg

She arrived in style with a very hot smelly Front calliper well and truely stuck on.
732E40F3-BCB3-4A2B-BDDA-29A57CDA57C9.jpeg

Also some interesting bits, like a flat bottom steering wheel. Strangely the first Z3M I’ve seen with a manual roof.
1E8F2407-01E3-4027-A202-3C1B2CAEC4A7.jpeg

With the seat bushes done we rolled her in ready for Saturdays tear down.
4FEFCFD5-FC7D-4C21-A9AD-F9A19F7673A5.jpeg

She didn’t disappoint, she came apart relatively easy I don’t think @Mazza would agree we left him fighting the exhaust for an hour up front.

Not to much rust at all, just surface.

Near side
2DD39E5A-8415-4CD7-8D28-D2FA5183F268.jpeg

And the normal shot beam bushes. Sat rubbing on the plate.
68AA5F3D-591A-404E-A662-3C4A915865C0.jpeg

this time we spent around 2 hours getting the car apart as the front exhaust section flanges didn’t want to come apart.
48C594AF-43EB-4C46-9691-E3BFE55A63F9.jpeg

can confirm torn beam bushes.

They shouldn’t be trying to polish the plate =))

Let the strip down for powder coating begin.

and the other
6771F531-7A3C-4AE6-B093-8E352DAA8E71.jpeg

we had one casualty. One of the wheel bearings protested being removed.
1541FC14-FDA3-4EF3-93E1-F1185B74E6BA.jpeg

Under side looking all dusty.
9D152280-9E47-449D-8EC6-5DB1B9D721A1.jpeg

Now the back was stripped we had a look round the rest of the car. Looks like a mechanic forgot to fit bump stops and dust covers to the front shocks, this is actually an MOT failure.
C1AD51ED-48B2-4F20-AD7F-B0ECDCB04E85.jpeg

All the hardware up front has been replaced recently so no need for me to do too much. I’ll need to remove the shocks and sort the mistake and rebuild both front callipers.
620D4025-7384-4C4A-8D4F-70A2924407E0.jpeg

Both callipers, one has an incorrectly fitted seal so no surprise it’s now stuck.

plenty to keep me busy the coming weeks. Diff needs some love

old beam bushes removed.
74CAC92E-E6C7-4B8A-BA6E-DDE1B6FAEA03.jpeg

one hell of a pile of parts for powder coating.

Lots of ordering to do tonight. :)

My black beauty! Never heard it called that before 😊 so, a few issues already which i thought id had sorted. The BMW specialist I took it to wasn't perhaps the specialist I thought. At least I'm confident it's now in safe and experienced hands and am already fascinated with all the work to get that improved driving experience. Thanks guys - I'll be bringing up the rear shocks when they arrive along with the biscuits - or just folding stuff for the brekky!

Today was a good day, shame we had no powder coated bits. It was a more relaxed chatty type of day, even @mwpe came down and offered his wisdom.

The last big job was removing the gearbox for indent pin replacement. Bill made the call late in the day to replace the clutch and flywheel so for now the gearbox is staying out. Gearbox gave us a little fight coming out, nothing we couldn’t handle. The ZF gearbox found in all 2.8/3.0/M’s
8F6B2F25-5802-45D7-95D6-EFCA8AD9DFFD.jpeg

With @Mazza standing by taking notes we started doing the simple indents gears 1-4. First pin bits removed

followed by new spring

and finally the cap. (No longer stocked by BMW now sourcing these caps elsewhere)

once those 3 were done. It was the tough ones. Reverse and 5th you need to break out the old liner.
55AC072D-AEBE-466E-901E-94C940B0705F.jpeg

once 5th and reverse are done you should have a full house.
924E47C4-59C2-4C41-947E-66AF19781469.jpeg

while we were inside the guys outside begun stripping down the front callipers and cleaning up the diff. Clear to see with the piston on the right rust under the dust cover line, this in turn means it will grab in the bore.

This is what happens with a badly fitted dust cover.

Rebuild kit ready and waiting.

But first they need painting :) (first coat)

Then a photo of the diff receiving a clean up.
45A6EAB7-A7A0-4FCB-AA9C-33FFFDA36E8B.jpeg

Next we pulled the flywheel and clutch assembly. Not in bad condition for 70k. Few heat marks nothing big.

clutch disc itself just starting to crack.
4249016A-30D6-4543-A27E-CF4D8C657988.jpeg

Also worth noting @Mazza fitted your set of tank straps today, he did say it’s now double the price…. His analogy was “you don’t see Bill Gates coming round to install office for you” =))
31527AFD-6B52-4CB3-AB32-D45BDB63D793.jpeg

We compared the new front M discs to the pattern part discs fitted, no comparison really.

Pattern part (non floating)

BMW disc (floating)

So plenty of progress made today. Old shocks also removed, not much we can do now till the powder coated bits arrive.

It's taken 2 beers and 2 re-reads to appreciate everything you guys have done to put right some shoddy past work carried out on poor old 'black beauty'! I'm not sure I supplied enough biscuits for 6 people, but I'll add to the bacon butty fund next time I'm up there. Almost sounds like a proper worksite - 1 supervisor, 1 foreman, 3 workers and an apprentice 😆😆😆 Everything is looking great and apologies for the late call on the clutch - hope that hasn't created any problems for you and I hope I have 'supplied and fitted by Mazza' signed on the tank straps 😂 looking forward to the next installment - and a big thanks to all who've been involved 🍻🍻🍻

Only a little update. Still waiting on the powder coaters to catch up, he was saying now everyone’s back at work it’s gone silly. He’s promised everything by the weekend.

Spent a few hours cleaning brakes and painting a few bits.
Second coat on the front callipers and painted the first coat on the rears.

we also took delivery of the new clutch & flywheel.

still plenty of bits to fit.

this also might be the last full build for a little while, I start my new job in a couple of weeks. If I do any more they won’t be at this pace because I can’t do this many hours during the week :)

All coming together nicely and even the weather looks like it's improving 🌞 I feel very lucky to be the last big rebuild before you start your new job - think I'll buy a lottery ticket for this weekend! Thanks Lee, Trev and all your team 👍👍👍

Bit late with the Saturday update, Bill was here most of the day so got to see first hand the chaos. The morning was building Mazza’s subframe and arms and Pm was reassembling Bill’s M. She’s around 90% complete just waiting on the return of grit blasted brake carriers.

we started assembling around midday, back end back together and torqued. All looking very shinny now.

shortly followed by shocks and lowering springs. Prop and exhaust followed after.

Beam bushes now sat at the correct height and being fully supported by the bush.

just needs brakes now :D
