Hi,I want to fit a bike rack to my Z3 from time to time. BMW don't seem to accept much whereas Saris Bones 2 appears to fit well. Halfords refused to open a box to measure and check!! Any one with experience please.

You could try a BMW Z3 hitch with a modified receiver or ball insert. That is, have a new ball receiver welded up that would turn 90 degrees as it leaves the hitch and has a square tube to receive the bike rack.
I have not done this, I don't want a bike rack, but the idea of doing it for other reasons sparked this idea. In my scenario, I would use a cargo carrier for light loads that adapts to the standard BMW aftermarket hitch receiver.
