I think many would say that 17" are the best all round. Just depends what you want I suppose, comfort, looks etc.

17 are probably best going on looks/ride quality, and there are plenty of decent looking 17's out there. Personally I've been happy to compromise a little on ride and been on 18's for most of the last 7 years of owning a Z3.

It's a tough decision, so many nice styles out there. In addition to what I said previously decent quality tyres will make a big difference irrespective of which size you go for.

Have you see any styles you like so far? For a different selection you could try having a look through http://bmautosport.com which is where I bought my first set of 18's. He mainly deals with new/used BMW wheels and has his categories laid out so that you can see all the wheel types which will fit the Z3, irrespective of which model they actually came off. Decent enough chap too from my various dealings with him.

Any thoughts on best wheel size. Obviously looks V ride quality comes into play.
OEM 16"
Any larger and they make the Z3 look like a horse drawn cart IMHO....

16" on mine with loads of rubber makes for a comfortable ride with no tram lining.

looks wise prefer the 18 but ride and handling prefer the 17 just that bit less fidgety on the 17's but its like everything else down to personal taste and preference.

Andy. Only got it a week ago. Already been in for oil service, new radiator, seats fixed (rocking), ordered a new wheel from Royal and going up to Glasgow tomorrow about a new hood from these guys.

Ah, right. Plenty of time to get the right set. Or two, summer and winter. Good luck with the roof

Bought a new window but having second thoughts as no one local wants to fit it. It's going to be £750 for the roof....

Yeah, agree with Andy. Take your time choosing the wheels. So many brilliant styles for the Z. I was sold on the z4 18" 108s but went for a 17" z3 split rim in the end. Comfort and handling over looks for me because of the crappy roads.
