Best way to wire halos as DRL

Hello

I am going to try and install some halo lights and I am wondering if anyone has figured out the best way to get them to function as day running lights without having to use the headlights switch and wiring them to the sidelights

I was thinking of putting a relay and then get the signal for the relay from something that works when you put the key on the Acc position but what is the cleanest way to do this?

The other question is I want the halos to switch off once I switch the headlights on at night, I seem to remember someone has used a "pull down" relay in series driven by a signal from the headlights but I can't find the post now.. Any other way to do this?

Thanks

You can probably figure out something using 2 relays, one that triggers with ignition signal. Then that signal to a second relay that gets its trigger from running lights.

I ran a wire to the halo's from the fuse box.
by taking the lid off the fuse box, undoing and lifting the top of the fuse box up and connecting to an ignition switched live under there on the fused side of a 5 amp fuse. Cannot remember the fuse number though.

to get them to switch off when the headlights come on, you could wire them through normally closed contacts on a relay fitted near to the headlights. One that uses the headlight live to energise the coil which will then cut the halo circuit by opening the NC contacts

Thanks guys for the suggestions really useful, that harness colb looks like it will save me a lot of work, mind you it's for leds and mine are CCFL so I don't think the half power function will work for me I believe CCFLs are not dimmable but maybe there's an equivalent harness for this type, will search

Thanks for your help I am a bit confused this one says that it will cut the brightness of lights to 50% with lights on - does it completely switch off on yours? I need something to turn them completely off - Let's keep searching if not :)

The one I have on mine has not got the dimming mode in it, switch the side or headlights on and the drl's switch off. Lights off drl's are lit, turn off ignition and lights fade to off after 12 seconds. Looking at the ebay items it apperas the spec of these have been updated and they all have the dim to half power now when side or headlights are switched on. The Amazon one you linked to looks like it would do the job without the dimming facility. Mine has been on about 3 years, no markings on the unit it was from a Chinese seller and cost £3.88 in 2017.
Might be worth getting one as they are cheap and trying it out with the sensing wire connected to the side or headlight to see if the led's accept the power drop to dim. Otherwise leave it disconnected so they are on with the ignition on and turn off when ignition turned off, they would o course remain on when you switch on headlights or sidelights.

I am going to try the Amazon one for now even if it is a bit more expensive as I think it will work exactly as I want and it will arrive quicker, will report back.

@Mario, I wouldn't bother running CCFL's as DRL's because
  • They're not very bright during daylight
  • They won't last long with constant use

I will be swapping mine for LED's when I get time.
