Battery chargers- some care needed

The battery charger/battery had an issue causing a fire- the Bentley and Lara Croft life size statue were saved (yes really!) but the message seems to be that CTek and other chargers can fail or if the batteries is not 100% to begin with it can overheat with major consequences.
 
Having seen a faulty battery being overcharged before, I'd never leave a charger going unattended for a couple hours or more :dead:

The battery in question was being charged in my dad's X5, I didn't realise but he'd been charging it for a good few hours in the middle of the day on medium charge. Thought I'd better go and check on it, found it swelled and boiling, actually looked like it was about to explode :wideyed:

I unplugged it straight away and luckily it cooled but was obviously a write off

When motorcycle manufacturers did away with kick starts in favour of electric starts there were loads of bikes catching fire due to over charging of the battery back in the 1970's. It was very common when the motor cycles were only used every few weeks and the batteries were allowed to run down. The quality of batteries and battery chargers have come on many fold so it's a relatively rare event these days, but it does still happen, and like you, I'm quite attentive to a charging battery.
 
One of my cars, my black Zed, is continually on a trickle charge when it's in the garage, which is 99.9% of the time. I check it every time I go in the garage.
 
My Z3 and Italian Stallion are both on Optimate/Accumate Chargers. I have been using optimate chargers since 2004 on my classic and modern classic cars without issue. Carcoon themselves supply an Optimate charger with the chamber.
I did for a while use a cheap eBay trickle charger for an Alfa. I think that may have faulted however it still worked but the battery in the car went flat. My Optimate revived it however.

Both cars are on constantly unless they're being used.
 
i don't know why people are giving this kind of claim! i am driving this card since long but fell that it's overall perfect.
