Hi need some advice from the experts on here.. having had my zed only for a couple of months there's a few things that need attention which I found out when I had it for a couple of weeks .. both rear brakes are binding on so have a scrapping noise coming from brakes ... anyway yesterday jumped on motorway near me got to 50-60 then an almighty thud/bang and sound on metal from rear end (I even looked in rear mirror as I thought something fell off car !!).... Pulled over and looked underneath but everything seemed ok ... Set off again and now I have what sounds like a chaffing noise coming from the back but only when it's in gear ...I can't get it into the garage just yet so it's sat outside ..any advice would be really helpful thanks

From what I can see it looks like maybe the rubber has shredded away and it's just the bolt ?.. would this cause the noise when in gear ?

Definitely. If you can raise the rear of the car on some ramps, then place a Jack with a block of wood on it under the Diff. try lifting the Diff. and you will see how worn the bush is.

Had the car on ramps this afternoon and raised diff up with no play at all but by the looks of it the diff looks like it has been replaced at some point due to it being sprayed silver compared to the rest of the underneath?

Strange, but possible. Could you post some pictures?

If the last one was pointed a little more to the left we could see the mounting bush too.

Gosh, a manky diff. Having just spent a couple of hours this afternoon whacking my diff with a hammer (quickest way to get a thick crust of rust off) I tip my hat to whoever did that spray job.;) Loud scraping from the rear, followed by a bang? My money would be on a problem with the rear brakes, they get rusty inside, and the shoe retaining pin thing falls out. Had it happen on my e36 many years ago, same brakes, near enough.

I would definitely change the Diff. Eye bush first. It’s shot, and needs changing anyway. Then see how things are. A “Polybush” can be fitted without removing the rear Diff. cover.

Cheers Tony hoping to get it into the garage as soon as to sort this out but I'll definitely tell them to change diff eye bush 👍
