Hi all,

As you may be aware I am looking for my first Zee and I now have chance of an auto. Now the only autos i ever had were an old mkII Granada 2.8 a mkIII Cortina 2000 and a MkII Jag 3.8 so a long time ago. Loved them all and things move on. Curiously an auto Zee kinda appeals. So is there anything specific you feel noteworthy. Btw found the Bavarian Auto vids on you tube, can see a few sad hours there watching lol. Regards Richard

I've got a 2.8 auto and love it. Most people prefer a manual transmission in a roadster but it's down to personal choice I suppose. Mercedes and Porsche put auto boxes in their roadsters so if it's good enough for them ........

Hi @Richardtc96 I have a 3.0 auto which has the 5 speed step tronic box which means auto or sport or manual modes
No good as a track car but for lazy cruising and fun in fast country roads very capable.
Gear changes are very smooth and once the torque converter locks up in 5th none of the slip you got in old autos.
You need to try one and see how you get on.
Where are you based as a local forum member might take you out in theirs.

I have driven @t-tony 3.0 Z4 auto and it was a superb drive. Mines a manual but I wouldn't have any problems owning an auto zed.

Cool thanks all. I'll make the effort and go and try. Kick down oh hell yeah i remember  It is a 2.8 so i figured should be ok with the torque it has and ofcourse weight.
Just as an aside am i right in thinking all m54 2.2 are double vanos (that's the other one i got to see) and all facelift models have the wider axle?
Regards
Richard

I also have a 3.0 auto. Before I had a 2.2 auto. I love them. It is quite hilly here and it is really tiring using a manual, maybe more fun in a manual but I use mine as a daily driver.

That's why my Z3 was an Auto, getting out of Lincoln in the evening is a PITA.

I like to feel mechanically connected to the rear wheels at all times. You don't get that through a slush box.
(Other opinions are available.)..

I work 1 mile from the A46 roundabout on Carholme Rd. and some nights it takes as long to travel that mile as it does the 11.5 further to home.:(

As usual, you are talking bull, maybe you had better stick to your traction engines....;)
Traction engines?? Whoever said anything about traction engines? .....As to talking bull, that's my opinion you're talking about and I'm perfectly entitled to to it. As you are to yours, without me calling it Bull!... Luv ya! :D

Thanks yeah I certainly would. Is that the same 231hp as replaced the 2.8 in the z3? Also how do you find the z4 compared to z3 any pros or cons as I am aware of a z4 2.0 at same place I am seeing a 2.2 z3? Thanks

Z3 and Z4 are two totally different cars Richard.
You would need to drive both cars to see but if you like a bit of grunt the a 2.0 4 cyl Z4 might not suit your needs.
I love mine with the Auto box.

I had a lovely Z3 2.8 auto and the engine and gearbox worked in perfect harmony.. silky smooth and the box matched the power range perfectly.. a real cruising car

I now have a Z4 coupe 3.0si with 6 speed manual box and it is a completely different animal. The power is much higher up in the rev range so to get the thrills you have to work the engine through the gearbox although it still has a lot of low down torque for easy cruising. Being a coupe it has a very rigid taut body that is perfectly balanced 50/50 over the chassis and the handling is crisp and sharp. I'd like to drive an auto version of the Z4 to compare..
