Less the ///M's and to a lesser degree the 3.0 the rest are to plentiful at present.

"They look like fabulously heroic, long-bonneted roadsters and are great to drive" - nailed it

Can't understand why you'd buy an MX5 when Z3s can be had for the same money. Just on looks alone the BMW batters the Mazda all over

    Audi TT225 - To femenine
Boxster 2.5 - Doesn't know whether it's coming or going
SLK - Double bagger front end
    S2000 - Bland looking

Yeah, ok a decent account but the author has done the same thing they all do. Talk about standard Z3 and show a picture of an ///M which I find a bit deceitful TBH.

Whilst it's a cheap Jag it's a good motor. The basic car is a Ford Mondeo which was the best car in class at the time, Jag just made it better. I get your point though.

Like the Z3, The X-type was also a very underrated car. I loved the one I had. For some reason the motoring press never really took to either of them when they were new and the reputation has stuck down the years. Still, it makes for cheap cars now which is why James Ruppert (the Bangernomics man) is interested in them.

Zs still have the BMW high maintenance price tag for most non DIYers to contend with so I’m thinking it scares a lot of people off. Certainly didn’t think I’d ever be able to afford/cope with one, but .org has shown me the way. ..

    “Applause, Applause,Applause.”

(Nothing like banging the .org drum.)
MG sports cars for instance are easy to maintain in comparison so it’s obvious to me they’ll get a lot more press seemingly making them more popular. Give the Z3 a few more years and maybe people out there will be willing to take them on. We’re just lucky we have/had them already. Think maybe we should invite press to some of our meets to show just how popular they’ve become, or should we be selfish and keep our little secret for while longer.??????

I think Z3s are a joy to work on (with due thanks to .org of course) Everything is simple nuts and bolts engineering with minimal electronics to go wrong - just the right amount to keep you safe and secure (e.g. ABS / DSC, airbags etc). Their relative simplicity was a big factor in my decision over other potential roadsters (e.g. Z4)

Btw, the Z3 buying guide the original article links to is also a good read:

The X-type was a decent car until they put a Diesel Transit engine in them. Completely ruined the car in my opinion. Horrible noisy rattley engine, mainly due to the DMF .

Half decent article. But ignorantly rubbishes the 2.2s suggesting going straight to a 2.8.

Over here an MX5 generally will cost more than a Z3. A young guy with a Miata comes in to the store where I work part-time ( I'm retired, it gives me money for Z stuff :)) and I told him I saw that he drove a Miata that wants to be a Z3 when it grows up. He was not amused and suggested some acts I don't think are physically possible...
