It would be more interesting and make more sense if they told you what the wrongful passes and failures consisted of.

All I know is that there seems a huge variation in quality of test centres, and until there is a bit more integrity with some larger providers then any stats can't really be trusted.

Why one car can fail in one centre, be driven to another the next day and pass is bemusing. If only we could clone @t-tony :)

Had that when I bought my Z3 this year, the front flexible brake pipes were down as an advisory only but when I took her for a service at a BMW dealer they said defo a fail so we're changed

The main thing that most people are not aware of is that IF an item is a 50-50 doubt the element of of doubt should go to the presenter of the vehicle. That is until you get a BMW dealer or any large entity who's over heads need to be maintained would rather that any doubt comes down on their side. No surprise there. From time to time I get subtle hints that maybe I don't fail enough cars, to which my reply is always the same," Can I have that in writing?" answer is always the same and the conversation ends. The only things which should not vary are the items tested by a "machine" , tyre tread depth, head light aim, brake efficiency and emissions ( the one thing VOSA aka the DVSA can't, don't, won't police properly. There's no wonder there is no uniformity. My personal choice would be to take vehicle testing completely out of the retail motor trade and have state run testing centres, as in The Republic of Ireland. Then there is no "profit related reason to test vehicles incorrectly.

Tony.

ps. I'm not saying I always get it right either, after all I'm just a man, not a machine.

That's down to the individual on the day - a certain motor chain that sells tyres, brakes etc doing MoT 's often used to fail a car on items that it sold - often brakes, but nothing too complicated to work on. Not that they were looking for work !! The Ministry will often have crackdowns on Test centres and on certain parts of the test.

On the issue of new cars, how many would fail say after 2 years ?

A good thing to do if you buy a new car, have it tested as soon as possible - i.e take advantage of testing it a month early as it will still be within its warranty period ;) After all it could be within manufacturers interests to have cars tested after 4 years, just in case it fails on a warranty part. Just sayin'
