What happened to me yesterday reminds me of the old saying, assume will make a Ass (of) u (and) me. For the last couple of years in winter I've been walking to my garage with my Jump Starter in my hand for all to see and yesterday a neibough stopped me and said, with a smile " hi Roy don't you think it's about time you bought a new battery for that lovely BMW of yours, I've watched you going round there for the last two years with that jump starter". Well I explained that if I hadn't used the jump starter so much I plobably would have needed new battery, I've no way of charging the batt in garage (no electricity) so instead of waiting for batt to go nearly flat I use it regardless and when doing small jobs on the car I connect it up and let jump starter distcharch itself into vehicle batt, seems to have worked so far cos the veh batt is Seven this March, what do you think?????? Yes yes I know the pic shows its switched off, it's only a pic for you, it's only a pic for you.=)) ;)

Me too Roy, I've had to boost start mine the last two weekends to move it out of the garage, but the time has come and it's only 2 1/2 years old.

I've also got battery issues, Roy. I don't start Mora, our Z3, up that often, but every time I do, I need to charge the battery, however I don't believe the battery is in bad condition, it's just that I don't use Mora enough in Winter, so she is sorned., If we go on a cruise, it's Monty, our Z4 than gets an outing. When the warmer weather arrives and I have finally fitted the new rad I have had for over a year, Mora will surface again.:)

Luckily I do have power in the garage, so ought really to buy a battery conditioner.and that would solve the problem once and for all!!

Hi Mike, yes know the feeling, wish I had power in the garage,I ruined the batt that came with Z leaving it too long between use, bought this one nearly 7yrs ago and bought jump starter after new batt was 2yrs old and never tried starting Z
without jumper feeding Z batt first, even if it's had a good run in that week, I think the longest I've left Z without running it is nearly a month and so far it's holding up fine, weather that's the use of the jump starter or not I've no proof but this batt holding out for 7yrs in March makes me wonder weather I've hit on something, maybe there's someone out there that can confirm. Tried disconnecting batt Neg but got fed up with radio needing code and alarm going off.:meh: :happy: It's worth all the hassle every time I drive it, :scorecard:gonna pass Z on to my oldest son even though he's no big fan.:poke:

Tony, if you've got a booster then try using it like me, a bit of a pain but the car batt never has to handle first start of the day/week/mth on its todd. :) Like doing the washing up on yer own and yer one and only oldest is there for Sunday lunch but don't offer. :happy:

Well hope you do Shelly, but I pay the local council £44 a month for the privelidge and its leaking so Z gets covered as well, they've promised to fix it but can't give a date, still it's better than parking it on road. Looking to sell up and down size for something with a garage or land to build a workshop, but not got much longer left at 67 getting too old to get underneath now, know this cos I've tried recently even with long johns on. :pompus:

There are solar powered trickle chargers. And I know what you mean about getting older and working on the car. As I was rolling around on the ground trying to get up from working on the car, I must have pulled a muscle in my shoulder that 's been hurting me for a month. Even have a tough time sleeping with it. Frankie

Sorry to hear that Frankie, did think about solar trickle charger but the vandals that hang around my garage would take great pleasure in taking it down, they're on the roof when I'm not around so I gave that idea a miss.:grumpy:

Had mine on charge 2 days and tried to start the car this morning, nothing, it's dead, this is a deceased battery etc. etc. Now all I have to do is bend the ears of my supplier into giving me a replacement f.o.c. After all it is only just over 2 years old, and what with me being careful, I don't want to buy one.;)

Regarding battery, here is a story you wouldn't believe:
When I bought my Zed from Germany on the car was an Energizer 9 years old!
(The US bat have written a very clear date of production, not a code like the UE made.)
For car battery which are not in a daily use , I put them on a charger every 30-45 days for 12-24 hours, according to the power level (when the Amps goes lower than 2.5 A and you can hear the "bubbles") the process is done.
I kept the Energizer for another two years on the Zed (11 years!! life time) and because I was afraid for an unexpected break down , during the summer trip, I replace it with another Energizer (US made too).
And I kept the habit to charge it every 30-45 days in Winter.:)
So some times the life time of a battery can be very short or very long!
What I can say is the charging system of the Zed is batt friendly and don't overload and damage the batt.;)

I haven't really checked in YEARS, but here, the Interstate battery, made be Johnson Controls, was, by a significent margin, the best battery on the market. Don't know if they still are, or if they are sold over there. Frankie, STILL at work.

Hi Lee, your probably right I would, the whole thinking behind taking the booster round is to preserve the life of the batt, if I thought batt wasn't up to it I wouldn't think twice, I believe that the jumper takes the real wack on initial start after car has been sitting for a couple of days to a month, so surely if car batt is not getting trickle charged and only doing half the work to start cold it's got to help towards the life of car batt, as your better informed than me I was hoping you might be able to quantify. Am I really just giving my right bicep some exercise or is this pain in arse jumping really helping. :meh: If the answer is NO then I will get the Pos and the Neg of booster connected to my testicles and throw the switch.
