It started with the overflow outside with a small stream of water .....ah Ballcock I thought !!
So turned off mains feed and took off valve. Luckily had all the bits in my plumbing stuff so quick clean and went back in the loft to reinstall it ..... only to find the tank was full and water again going down the overflow :arghh: :arghh:
So turned off water to kitchen mixer tap ...... still water coming out....... then turned off feed to bathroom .......and after a bit it stopped.
So turned the kitchen back on and still ok
So deduced had to be the mixer tap in the bathroom. ( I did turn it back on and it did over flow so confirmed it )
Worked out how to get the handle , spacer and nut off..... but after about an hour cannot get the cartridge bit out, which is probably the part that needs to be replaced.

Anyone know how they are meant to come out ???:oops:

Look down into where the cartridge sits. There should be a brass nut looking thingy, Will need a socket set to get it out. If there is no brass nut looking thingy then there may be a circlip to remove before pulling the cartridge straight up. If no joy, buy a new tap. Not expensive these days compared to the cost of buying the cartridge only
 
@Oompedoomp , I think you are right , replacement cartridge 29.95 plus carriage, new tap , similar with lots of good reviews 37.99 and in stock at screwfix about 4 minutes away 😋😋
 
BTW, Don't buy a new tap with a plunger that operates the plug. They're s***. Buy a normal mixer tap plus a new pop up waste. When you fit the new waste unscrew the top and then the brass plunger. Get yourself a small bottle of marine grade Lanoguard and coat the plunger. It'll prevent the inevitable scale build up.
 
I did manage to pull the cartridge out ( just a tight fit ) with some huge stilsons, and it looks like the problem is the brass casting where the cartridge seals press against ..... so as Oompy says, no brainier !!
So will get a new tap tomorrow as got to go out to send a strap set to California ( essential journey :whistle: ) and will get it all fixed tomorrow:thumbsup:
 
Oh and if you have an internal overflow in your sink make sure you get a pop upslotted waste!
 
Well what a prize plonker I am !!!!

Bought the new tap , which came with a pop up drainer :thumbsup: .......then the day descended into doom and gloom:arghh:

the tails of the new tap were different so had to go and get some adapters ... get back home ....now crack on with it.....

Ah .....forgot about the pressure equalising valve that feeds the sink..... thinks ! Can’t be that, it’s only about 2 years since it was fitted:oops:.........but how to check it ?????

a bit of pipework cobbling later managed to disconnect the tap and blank off the pipes after the valve..... water back on !!!

Half an hour later......level had risen in the tank in the loft:arghh: B****cks !!!!!! Turn water off again !!

The Culprit!!!!!

red and blue is how it’s meant to work, coming out at equal pressure, but diaphragm damaged and the purple is what it was actually doing!!

So a quick tap swap was now becoming a marathon plumbing exercise!!

A bit of temporary pipework later and basin hot and cold feeds isolated and blanked off.
A quick phone call and New valve ordered , then 10 minutes cleaning all the waste pipes.

Just got to clean the old silicon off the sink ready to refit it all.......but that can wait till tomorrow.

could have saved on buying a new tap but not to worry, and the new one looks nicer:D

And it does relieve lockdown boredom=))
 
It was not that long ago that you had a hot tap and a cold tap (or a mixer tap if you were fancy). Simple rubber washers that lasted for ages, were easy to replace, and cost mere pennies.
Now we’ve got expensive, unsustainable, inbuilt obsolescence. Not my definition of progress..

Cant complain about the service......part arrived via UPS this afternoon.....

Now just got to fit it.........Tomorrow I think :whistle:
