It was in the trunk of the 01 Z3 that I got from my dad. It's got clear plastic on one side, sort of a felt like surface on the other. Elastic with black clips at the corners. What the heck it is for?

A protector for the rear window when putting the top down? It kinda looks rear-window sized/shape. I'm guessing the hooks go onto the roof frame

Possibly “home made”?

As others have said it appears to be probably a homemade rear window protector.
This is what the genuine bmw one looks like.

Got to say looking at the picture that one will do just as good a job as the original article but at a fraction of the scandalous 70 odd quid that bmw will ask you to part with .
I was lucky to find the one I have cheap on ebay it was pretty dirty and marked part of the reason for price but washing machine sorted it out nicely.
I would totally advocate DIY one of these doable at fraction of the cost.

I use a home-made protector, made from a fleece blanket, with a pocket for some foam pipe lagging in the centre of the window, which maintains a nice-sized bend radius when folded. It also extends over the roof, to prevent the stitching from being abraided by the fabric, and producing shiney areas.

I also use it as a pillow when camping!

I have seen a BMW hood protector which was made of thick felt, and supplied for the US market - fine for California, where the roof is permanantly folded, but impractical elsewhere, as it must have almost filled the boot once the hood was raised.
