Cleaning under the bonnet the other day and noticed what appears to be a small vacum pipe leading from a large cannister down by the alternator up to the fuse box  as it gets to the fuse box it:confused:s joined by a 90 degree connector to a short piece of black and white rubber pipe, this piece seems to be quite perished will it affect the running or anything else?

It is for the exhaust tailpipe valve in the back box. It supplies a vacuum to the pneumatic valve which is in the rear near side wing. The canister acts as a reservoir so there is enough volume to pull the valve shut.

HI Aceman, I know my exhaust valve doesn't work its open all the time (sounds quite nice :):)). Could the small pipe that seems to be perished be the cause of the valve not working, can I do away with the elbow and connect straight to the fuse box?
Could this make any difference to running?

Could well be as the valve is open with no vacuum so if the pipe is perished it may not be generating the required vacuum at the rear of the car. Certainly won't do any harm taking the elbow out, worth checking if you are generating a vacuum at the front end first by disconnecting at the elbow, running the engine and putting you finger over the end and wait for it to build up a vacuum and then release to see if it hisses back.

Hi folks

Another item under the bonnet to delete (if you have a custom exhaust with no valve). Must take it out and cap off the vacuum nipple (rear/underside of manifold). I can just get my hand in there to add a cap.

Cannot think of any side-effects as it is now redundant, can you @Aceman
