Queens English" "turn signal"
Hi Rudy, always the difference between both of our use of English.:) The main thing is to remove the ignition key and put it in your trouser pocket. Next, move the turn signal lever to either the right or left position and check to see if the front and rear parking lights illuminate on one side of the car only. Hope that makes sense.:)

Tony.

Tony, I have to go past this position against spring pressure, then the stalk returns to the left or right position.

Hi Dave, in my car I just select the normal "indicator on" position with no key in.

Ha, great to see consistency in the build then Tony...not =))

That is strange Steve, I wonder why that might be, unless there could be an ECU setting which was applied at the factory maybe. I wonder if anyone out there does know?

Tony.
Trust mine to be different knowing my luck its several different cars bodged together,it is strange though, why would you need parking lights on the near side ? You have to park the car facing the 'flow' of traffic. And its suprising how much interest this thread has generated .

That has got to be a first Dave. Love it.:D:D

Hi Tony, Oh... I have done all that. The turn signal control in my car has no such function. Thanks for the cool explanation though!
US cars have 4 way flashers, they are the only lights visible (when engaged) with the key off. Otherwise there are no functioning lights when the key is in your trousers.
And a key in your trousers is no fun!

Hey Rudy, that is very true my friend. The key should be in the ignition.:) Thank you for persevering with the English, from an Englishman.=))

Tony.

Are we going to go off topic about keys cuz there's a thread already. Or can we conclude that BMW cleared out several different parts bins and there doesn't seem to be any consistency throughout the build years??

Just tested my 2002 2.2 and it works for both sides! :) But under these conditions: Do not leave the key in the ignition.

01. Push the indicator stalk to the left , then push it a bit further, it will have a strong 'spring' resistance then jump back into the left hand indication selection - the left hand side parking lights remain on,
02. Push the indicator stalk to the right, then push it a bit further it will have a strong 'spring' resistance then jump back into the right hand indication selection- the right hand side parking lights remain on,

It is not possible to have the left and the right on at the same time. I suppose this allows you to put the lights on the side that face the traffic no matter which way you park.

That's the Cooper Report for tonight. Drive safely.

Hi @Cooper, yours works exactly the same as I described earlier on mine.;)

After reading Cooper's post i'v had a proper look at mine....same as cooper's.Didn't realise you have to push the indicator stem past the usual point...thanks Cooper .

Thanks @Mint for sharing your observation on how it works. That motivated me to have a go, but cautiously as I was a bit nervous about pushing the stalk past the normal turn indicator positions! I used to be a Quality Assurance Manager hence the detailed instruction on how to activate the parkers and testing left and right sides! :)
