Sorr to start another thread about my driveshaft woes but not having much luck and seems to have gone unnoticed or maybe no one’s interested?☹
CV joint shattered on wife’s 3.0 last weekend, BMW no longer manufacture them and if they had one they were close to £500! Real OEM has the part as not being used on any other car, ordered two from JandR online that were listed for the 3.0 arrived today and although theyare the correct length and splines the inner CV joint is 15 mm smaller in diameter so no good.
Anyone in the shed had the same problem? Surely there must be a compatible CV joint to replace the broken inner, any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi Peter, @Lee is probably the most knowledgeable man to ask.

The 3.0 drive shaft is bespoke to the 3.0 model which makes things annoying (6 cyl models do cross over though ones hollow ones solid inside etc etc). Might be worth looking at either having it fixed (I use propshaft services in Hayes) or buying a second hand unit, they are about.

Thanks guys, was hoping I could obtain a CV joint as surely BMW wouldn’t use a joint unique to one car? Would you know anyone with 3.0 shafts Lee ?

Your right, very unlikely to be different just for the joint itself, these are normally off the shelf units I don't know as I've never had to look.

Let us know what you find lots of CV joint suppliers around.

Just got off the phone to a local prop company in Bristol who says he may be able to match it ,will take it in, also mentioned that if it’s shattered the CV housing that it may have damaged the diff flange which if running out of true is another problem entirely !

The worst part is that it looks like it was my fault, the off side is fine and torqued correctly but I lost 4 of the 6 torx bolts so must have had a senior moment( an expensive one) and forgot to tighten the nearside properly ☹

The diff flanges pops out. Maybe change the diff flange to a smaller one and use the new shaft.

I don't think your wife will be racing or drifting the car too much, so a smaller flange will likely last the distance.

Ordered a pair of flanges so hopefully they will fit the new drive shafts and I can make some progress.

Ongoing saga…… Parcel Monkey really lived up to their name and took almost 2 weeks to deliver secondhand flanges, unwrapped in anticipation just to find the newly arrived flange is still too large on the new shafts inner joint!
Flange measures approx 103 mm across, CV end approx 95 mm hence the holes don’t line up! Do standard 2.8 inner driveshafts measure 103 across or have I been sold something else? Any advice/ guidance really appreciated , wife wants her Z back on the road……..
