At Least The Pilot Was OK.
Imagine going to a popular airshow to enjoy the sight and sound of your favorite warbirds only to witness a very peculiar crash. This is exactly what happened back in 2002 at the Lowesoft Air Festival.

Not an ideal landing. Could be many things but generally speaking when Harriers fall out of the sky in the hover it's more often than not a "pop surge". With the nozzles down so close to the ground (sea in this case) the exhausted hot air can recirculate into the intakes meaning less air being drawn in as it were. Less air = less power = falling from the sky. Seen it quite a few times especially in the very hot summers that amplifies the
 
We were on holiday at the time :p
But I can remember it well :)
 
A tad embarrassing for the pilot I bet. Was that a windsurfer close to where it came down. One hell of a shock for that guy too.

The drop off in power was instant and dramatic. The pilot was quick to punch out though.
 
Was on the flight deck of HMS Invincible when one ditched in the sea right next to the side there were bits of canopy all over the deck.:watching:
