I all. I got my z3 yesterday. The antenna grommet needed replacing, so I set about doing that. The stock antenna base unit ended up cracking off where the antenna screws in. Old and brittle. My stereo unit is aftermarket, so do I have to use this unit?

Short answer, No you don't. Unless of course you want to keep original look. I saw a 3 a while back with a stubby, It looked good IMO... Thoough I wouldn't be convinced it works as well in poor reception areas...I'm guessing you already checked to see if has been leaking ...;)

The grommet was gone, and the previous owner had a new one. I was simply going to install it. Then the end of the unit broke off. It had not been leaking.

Not unusual . But in answer to your question. pretty much any antenna will work, how effectively is another question..I drove around in a Mk2 Cortina in my youth with a coat hanger as an antenna.. worked a treat, and handy too , if I went swimming... ;). Any breakers around you that may have an original. If the previous owner gave you one with the car, there must have been a reason. It might have been broken before you went to fix it.. dunno.

But research "ground plane".. Its important for any antenna If you want reach...

Used replacements are not cheap, suitable alternatives possible but hard to find, replaced my broken one with a rubber flex mast eBay find. Works but not great as it’s not amplified like the original.

I’m reluctant to spend $150 on a new unit, unless it’s worth it. I don’t think that I want to try a used one for the reason my original broke. Hard old plastic.

As @colb mentioned, antenna amplifiers are great if you need to pick up weaker signals, although they amplify interference as well. I would suspect that this is not your case.. The aftermarket head unit is probably going to be quite happy with any antenna you find aesthetically pleasing. .. Maybe consider, if you go that way. A motorised one that retract with the radio off.. I think that would be a nice touch on a Z, and have considered it myself, having had several broken off over the years by boof heads... Although that might require a bit of bodywork.. Maybe $150.00 aint so bad...

Well I did a strange hack today. The broken unit was securely lodged in the grommet, so I mounted up the grommet and installed the antenna. No one will know that it’s not hooked up to the booster. I reattached the booster to the fender, and hooked up the cable and ground. I’ll see if I get any radio tomorrow. CDs are sounding great though!

Haha. I’m quite over the coat hanger stage. I’ll just play cds until I find a new booster unit that I feel like buying. Hey, I plugged the hole, and it looks correct!!

I have the whole aerial assembly removed from my 2000 breaker if interested, and of any use to you.

Depends on who you use…. But sending Z3M tank strap sets to the USA is only about £24….and they are 2kg

How much is the postage to Silvis, Illinois?
I got two tonneau covers sent from the UK to Australia.. for 70 quid postage.. I was chuffed. I sold one of them for what it cost me to get both sent here, including the covers... ;). Still waiting for someone to sell me a leather covered binnacle cover though.. Australian sunshine is punishing... but I guess freight costs are relative to availability...

Who do you use to send, 24 guid for 2 kg... That's pretty good, considering the size as well...

My rebodies don't use the original aerials. I have fitted the type that stick onto the windscreen which seem to work OK. I switched on the radio/USB player once but it didn't enhance the driving experience so I haven't bothered since. I'd far rather listen to the exhaust notes,
