Hey guys, you may have seen my previous post about me fixing lifter tick. Now I have another noise coming from the engine of my m52. This time it almost sounds like a bolt or something is in the engine getting thrown around. When I rev it to about 2500 you will hear a loud screetch and then it also has a rough idle with some miss fires. At this point my first thought was I blew the engine after all of that other work I just finished doing to it. It ran great for such a long time. Just one cold start in the morning and all these noises came out of nowhere. I have really considered giving up on this thing at this point because it seems to give up on me. I noticed a few things when messing around trying to figure out what's wrong with this thing. The oil cap was insanely tight I could not get it off at all. So I pulled the dip stick and then it came right out. Also I noticed the clunking noise is very intermittent it only happens sometimes unlike rod knock and lifter tick which will occur forever. After doing some research I found out that the pcv system could be the problem I did replace the pcv system when doing all the head work but I did replace it with a cheap aftermarket solution. Could that be the problem? Let me know what you guys think.

I found a few videos that have the exact same noise as mine and they claim the ccv is the issue. Take a listen

Unfortunately I didn't record mine because I was to scared to start it back up since it sounded so terrible but from what I'm reading online ccv can make this clunking noise. And it sounds way worse then it actually is. I'm going to disconnect some of the hoses going to pcv to see if the noise goes away. Fingers are crossed at this point. That noise is absolutely horrific sounding. Best way to describe it is imagine taking s bag of nuts and bolts and dumping it into your intake and letting your engine eat them. It's absolutely horrible.

Disa valve can also sound pretty bad if worn out.
Stephen.
I don't know If this is good news or bad news but 1997 z3 doesn't have a disa valve. Otherwise I definitely would have checked that.

I dove just a little deeper last night looks like I'm getting misfires on all of the cylinders or almost all of the cylinders so at this point I'm definitely thinking I have some sort of vaccum leak issue I'm going to check all of the vaccum lines over and see if i can find leaks. I'm also going to try starting it with the maf sensor unplugged to see if it runs better or worse.
