Welcome to the newbie, I do find this forum very friendly!

As for the boot hinge, whats a scuttle? We don't use that term (in US) in the way that you might so it isn't registering.
Sounds like the hinge is making contact with the body though after replacement strutts installed. If thats the case then yes a worn hinnge might be the cause, best to look at it outside the car, as a part and not structure.
