Yes, it can be done from inside. But it almost impossible to clean lenses from inside, not saying to polish. So I've cut them open, which is laborious and scary process, the set cost me about £300 so some bravery required to attack those expensive items with dremel tool. Some bits of frame gone while opening, but there still enough meat to glue everything back together. I'll perhaps use windscreen adhesive to put them back together. So next step going to be to sand and lacquer lenses, then I'll fit angel eyes and a separate connector for angel eyes on back side, just in case if MOT inspector find them not legal - I could disconnect them before mot.

@ppavuk, you do not need to cut your lights open you just need to heat the head lights up.
And by the way, IMHO, I think Angel eyes look like carp on cars of this age.
Why would you want to make a Z look like an Audi?

No, on z3 you can bake and open headlight. On z4 - they used different adhesive, so no point to heat it - it not becoming any less stiff, so only way is to cut.

And angel eyes - well, they looks good to my taste, and BMW did put them on some cars of this age, actually they can be found on 2001 E39, shame BMW didn't put them on E85, which is later model after all, so I don't see why not to install them.

The primary goal of the project was to get properly refurbished headlights set, but why not to upgrade? The problem with z4 headlights is that 99% of them suffered from water ingress, which makes lens somewhat cloudy from inside. Initially I've thought just to polish lenses from outside, but after I done this I found that there is some contamination inside. So had to open. Same there is contamination on reflectors itself, which can be addressed without cutting glass, but front lenses virtually impossible to clean from inside.

Angel eye rings OK as front position lights if you remove the original bulbs and they are the only position lights and are "white" This applies to M.O.T. Other wise no different to all other BMW's out there with them fitted.

thanks @t-tony!
So then to have a switch to switch between AE and normal bulb seems rather clever option. These led AE will cause failed bulb warning, as they are led, so switch and ballast then.

what shall i do with ae when low or high beam on? Should these be off, or may remain on?

Regards the M.O.T. Peter it doesn't matter. If they're wired into the side light circuit they will stay on with headlights, but you won't see them anyway. I have just re-wired my LED front DRL's so that they dim when dip beam is switched on, these stay on with main beam so they're dimmed with headlights on, not with just side lights though. I hope that makes sense, if not I'll post some pictures.
