I thought I would take the alternator off and give it a service, the poor thing couldn't breathe fag end a stick and rammed with leaves, and the vent was rammed with leaves as well, I think I'm going to make a filter for it.

Looks as though a bird or mice could nest in there

Something's been using that as a food store. I would be checking around for chewed wiring if I were you.

I've bought the car a year ago ish and was in need of love I've been over the whole car top to bottom seats out you name it everything is tip top as they used to say, I only took the alternator off as I was board, glad I did :) the z3 come from Wales wet and leafy, the only bad wireing on the car that I do need to do is round the boot opening, one of the wires has completely cut its self so now the boot doesn't lock off the fob, I'm just in the process of trying to make a better design for them, I just find it crazy those wires crunching against each other every time you open and close the boot.

Hi Trevor, yes that is a common thing on Z3s, often referred to on here as "The Loom of Doom". Very common on lot's of other makes too.
Sounds as though you're enjoying getting to know your car.:)

The loom of doom lol not heard that one before Tony, I've been working on cars all my life and I can honestly say I've enjoyed every moment of fixing her up I feel proud to drive it, I have two z3s I bought the 1.9 first but I got extremely jealous when I pulled up to a garage one day and heard someone start their z3 2.8 up..so I had to get the 2.8 it's a completely different world :)

I did think I would find a dead mouse in the vent but maybe he or she found alternative shelter :)

I had one that used to live in my shogun engine bay, I used to use the car most days but every time I checked under the bonnet there was a particular place that it would sit and eat as there was droppings and food remnants, the nest was next to the fuse box, I often wondered if it stayed in its nest whilst I was driving around

I had a mouse store food in the cavity under the air filter on my old Talbot Solara. It must've kept itself very busy carrying Hemp seed which I used for fishing.

Yes Z3 ownership is addictive. There are now 3 in my shed. Started with a 3.0L, picked up a rare Mora Red individual 2.0L to fix up, then a Estoril Blue individual 1.9L to fix up. Haven't got around to selling any of the fixer up cars yet.

My first Z was a 2000 Z3 2.0 which was a great car, but I suffered the same type of thing you did and I ended up with my Z4 3.0.;)

Yep me too, started with a 2.0l and now got my leg well and truly into what would have been a dead 2.8

I've got to admit I was torn between the z3 and z4 3.0 but they both look freaking cool

All down to personal choice mate. Mine has to be my daily use car and I feel it's easier to live with a Z4 every day rather than a Z3. That simple.
