Shopping in Lidl today and they have compressors and lots of different air tools. Was very tempted to add them to my shopping basket.

What size was the compressor ? I'm looking for a larger compressor to power my lift.

Air tools are great Steve but you need a fair sized tank for capacity to run them for long. Direct drive ones are very noisy and don't have capacity so they're continually starting and topping up pressure which can upset neighbours! I inherited my late father in laws old Compressor, I think it's a Tecalemit brand with a large single phase motor. I f you go looking at larger S/H ones bear in mind you'll need single phase motor.
If it's mainly for nut and bolt work think about a 1/2" drive rechargeable impact wrench and a 3/8" drive rechargeable ratchet.

Tony.

I'm not really looking for one Tony - don't have the space at the moment. I'm a bit of a sucker for buying tools in Lidl though as you just don't get interesting stuff in Morrisons.

I know what you mean mate, I shop at Aldi ;)=)) I've bought lots of good DIY grade tools from there.

Tony.

I have one of these, but the Aldi equivalent. Same output and tank size.
Trouble is it has a job to run air tools as it uses up the tank capacity very quickly, and the compressor output afterwards is just too low.
I have ended up using it as a blow gun, and sometimes to check tyres, but thats about it.
The impact wrench would have a job to undo 10mm nuts, the sander slows right down, the descaler would struggle with a kettle, and the sand blaster, well, I may as well just throw the sand at the part.
I must have spent over £200 to fill my tyres.. Total waste of money

Ps if anyone is interested in buying a compressor, please pm me..
Mind you, I think my sales pitch was not particularly that good.. anyone still tempted?

I did quite a bit of research when I was looking for a compressor. I came to the conclusion to do everything I wanted it to do (mainly the regular stuff already mentioned) I wasn't going to get change out of £250 at retail.

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/airmaster-tiger-16510-3hp-50-litre-air-compre/
  • 50 litre air reciever
  • 14.5cfm air displacement
  • Maximum operating pressure: 8 bar (116 psi)
  • 3hp, 50Hz, 230V Motor
I bought it while it was on offer at £200 knowing I wouldn't be using it for some time and it was something for future projects (initially soda blasting and spraying). But didn't want to miss that price. But I'm sure once it's set-up I'll be using it for blowing up tyres and with wrenches too.

So I can't give a view on it otherwise yet. But I do know for some of the more demanding jobs like the soda blasting it will be stretching it to the limit and it will only be any good on small items maybe up to wheel size.

The reviews are very good on it with the point being that was the least amount of money I felt I could throw at it to have a good degree of confidence (from the reviews and MM staff) to do the stuff I wanted.

The 14.5 cfm is ok Rob but the 50 ltr tank will mean it will be running virtually continuously. But, I would rather have this than nothing.:)
No chance of it being up to spraying more than a panel at a time though.

Yeah that's pretty much what I thought I was in for. But I couldn't justify spending any more.

I gather I can add another air tank if required. So concentrated on the flow rate.

A mate had a petrol engine comp. at his house in the middle of town some years ago but he ran the exhaust under ground and it was virtually silent when running.

i got an aldi one had it years has given me great service... did get an impact wrench and a ratchet air impactor... they both useless but find the compressor great for car and motorbike tyres and the blow gun is so useful.. use it for cleaning out carb jets, and great for cleaning the dust out of house radiators, and unblocking our shower tray when it all full of pubes...

DIY? how dare you! I used one of their £4.95 1/4" socket sets extensively on a £1.5M super yacht refit a while back and it coped very "professionally" thank you!
